Baby Names

? Ryan / Ryann ?

(I posted below about DH wanting to name our DD Allie...but I cannot find a full name that I like...and we have a niece named Kali - so I think Allie as a first name is out)

Anyway.........the only name he has even remotely considered (if you could even call it that) is Ryan/Ryann. We like the Irishness and how it kinda matches our DS's name, Evan.

So my question in - Does Ryann look too "made up?" I kind-of think that adding the n will make it a little more feminine. He middle name will be feminine - Susan/Susanne/Susanna after MIL...so I may not even need to worry about a feminine 1st name as much.

What are your thoughts? Anything would help...DH is really being stubborn about this!! ; )

Re: ? Ryan / Ryann ?

  • I like Ryan with only 1 n.  I know 2 female Ryans and they both spell it the traditional way....

  • I really like it and prefer the "real" 'Ryan' spelling for a girl. ?BUT- I have a feeling you'll get mostly negative responses. ?Not a lot of people seem to like boy names for a girl. ?

But I vote yes, good name. ?:)?

  • 2 n's looks like rye-ann. if that's the pronunciation you're going for then go for it. if not then i vote no to the cutesey spelling.

  • Ryann is an actual name, but would people pronounce it like Ryan or would they say Ry-ann? btw the name means little king.

Thanks - I guess since I went to high school with a female Ryan - I consider it more a unisex name. I'm not usually a boy name for girls type person, either...at least I never gave it much thought.

  • I'm from Texas so maybe things are different down here with the twang and all but I would pronounce Ryann like Rye-Ann.

I really really like Ryan for a little girl.  I tried to get DH to go for it but he likes Parker for a little girl.  (We're both into the boy names.)

  • A male Ryan means little king...but female means little leader : ) Well, according to one irish dictionary I looked at.

  • I love Ryan for a girl!  1 n or 2, either way, it's cute.
  • I would be inclined to say Ry-anne if it is spelled with two N's, which i think is a fine name if that's what you're going for.
  • I agree that Ryann + Rye-Anne (pronounciation) and that Ryan + Rye-In.  So, depends on how you want it pronounced!  I think either is cute and fine, but if you want it Rye-In, then spell it Ryan.

  • We are using Ryan as our daughters' middle name. Ryann is a different name. If you like Ryan but want it different what about Rian? I know a lot of female Ryans
  • Ryann is a different name and is pronounced Rye-Anne

  • I went to school with two girl Ryans.  One was Ryan and the other was Rian.  I don't like the extra N in Ryann though.

  • I would just stick to Ryan.  :)
  • I like Ryan for a girl.  If you spell it Ryann, people may think its Ray-Ann.
  • I honestly hate Ryan for a girl...it's a shame b/c if we had had a boy when the twins were born name would have been Ryan. I felt like I couldn't even have it on the list this time since so many girls (their parents anyway) are stealing it.

What about Rianne? I did know a girl name Rian.

    Ditto.

  • Ryan and Ryann are pronounced exactly the same way.  Where I am from (Northeast) the one with 2 n's is feminine and the other is male.

This would be a name on my future list for a boy or a girl but my husband is Brian and that would just be silly :)

What about Erin?  Similar, Irish and goes with Evan?

  • I like Ryan for a boy....not a girl.  Why not Rian???
  • I like Ryan for a girl but thinks the second "n" is unnecessary.

  • Good Lord, stop naming your DD's Ryan! It's a boy name. Vent over.
