3rd Trimester

So, the baby care class instructor

Let it slip who her doctor was when she had her last baby 14 months ago.  She definitely did not deliver at the hospital that she teaches baby care and prepared childbirth classes.  Seemed kind of odd to me

Re: So, the baby care class instructor

  • It could just be an insurance thing - not all docs have privileges at all hospitals.  It could also be that she picked a hospital/doctor closest to her home.  I don't think it reflects poorly on the hospital you're delivering at.  I don't see the problem.

  • I don't mean this to come across the wrong way but I don't see where there's any relevancy between who is teaching the class and where they had their baby.  Maybe I'm missing something though.  I wouldn't worry about it.

    Same here.

  • I don't see why that's weird...
  • She could've felt strange having her coworkers and friends deliver her baby. She could still have the same doctor she's always had, long before she worked at the hospital.
    It could be her insurance.

I wouldn't think it reflects on the hospital at all and wouldn't worry about it.

  • I thought it was weird because you would think you would work at a hospital that you believe in enough to use.  Not that big of a deal, just a little weird to me.  Especially since she's a prepared childbirth instructor, it just seems like teaching about childbirth at one hospital and then delivering at another is kind of like being a teacher in one school district and then sending your kids to another.  It just sends a weird message.

And if your job is at a hospital I would think your insurance would cover delivery at that hospital

    That's all

My parents have been teachers for years and we never lived in the district where they taught... well, and they teach in two different districts.

I bet the vast majority of public school teachers have children that go to different schools/districts.

Me neither.  There could be many explanations for this.

Insurance covers particular doctors, but where the doctors practice/deliver is up to them. I don't think it reflects poorly on your teacher or the hospital. I can see why you might think that initially, though.

  • I do understand your concern. You want her to represent the hospital she personally experienced with her own childbirth. My class instructor is an RN and used to work on the Labor and Delivery floor at my hospital and now she just teaches classes. But it's nice that she can personally relate to what we will all go through. So it seems a little weird, but it's not necessarily a bad thing. She may have been established with her OB for years and then got this job at your hospital and didn't want to switch doctors. No biggie!!

  • Oh, I see where you are coming from I guess.  As a health care provider though, I would never want to do something as personal as give birth where my coworkers would be my providers.  It would just be too creepy and weird.  Do you really want your coworkers to see you like that?  I mean you could poop on the table, swear like a sailor, cry like a baby, etc.....   I would never want to go through that and then have to work with those people everyday.

I know this is OT but I would never send my kids to the urban district where I teach but that is another story all together.  I do see your original analogy but I agree with one of the pp who stated maybe her dr doesn't deliver at that hospital or there is one closer to her house...
