Is there another breast pump that works well?

I did not breast feed either of my boys, and a friend is a new Mom in need of advice. Her son was premature and she needs to buy a pump. Is the Medela one the best double electric? Is there another good one that is a bit cheaper?

Re: Is there another breast pump that works well?

  • I have a medela pump in style advance that is fantastic.  It empties me in like 7 minutes.  (Gosh, that sentence is weird to type out! haha)  I bought mine 3 years ago from lactationcare.com for $248.  Friends of mine have been able to get theirs covered by insurance...I'm sure since your friend HAS to pump, since her son was premature, she should be able to go the insurance route.

  • I have been very pleased with my Ameda Purely Yours pump (have used it now for both boys). I love that it's small, is a closed system (so FDA approved b/c no milk can get in the pump - so is safe to buy used and to resell), and easy to clean.  You can buy it alone w/o the carrying case, etc. for a lot less than the Medela models.  Replacement parts are easy to find online. It's a powerful pump for the price.  The Lansinoh version is the same pump, just under different branding.  :)

My lactation consultant said it's comparable to Medela pumps, but the Ameda costs less b/c they do less mass marketing and advertising.

Would highly recommend it, and would buy it again.

  • You could check on the Preemie board, but I've heard the hospital grade rental pumps are better at helping to establish a good milk supply than those that can be purchased (depending on what she wants the pump for).
  • I also used the Medela PISA with my dd and it is a plug in and also runs on batteries and also has a car adapter that you can buy extra for like 10.00. I love it.
