Picky Eater

DD is either the pickiest eater ever or just hates food.  I have a hard time getting her to eat anything.  In a normal day she will maybe eat 3/4 of an entire meal for the entire day.  I have taken her to the dr. for it because it doesn't always seem like she is being picky, but like there is something wrong with her.  When she does eat it seems like food with certain texture won't work for her.  She literally licks it before she will put it in her mouth.  It is so strange to watch her. Has anyone else had a child with such wierd food aversions?

Re: Picky Eater

  • She must be Sadi's long lost sister. Seriously, the girl eats like a bird. I've started carrying around a container of cut up fruit with me at all times to try and get her to eat throughout the day.

One day she'll LOVE the pear, the next day she acts as if I'm trying to feed her arsenic and spits it everywhere. One day she likes part of my sandwich the next day she acts as if the bread is concrete in her mouth and gags on it.

Typical day: for breakfast she'll have 1/2 jar of fruit (no cereal or oatmeal with it) and it's like pulling teeth to get her to eat that. (This morning she did have a yogurt w/ fruit and ate almost all of it so woohoo!). Lunch is 1/2 jar of a meat, veg starch mix (so all three in one jar and she eats half). Supper is the same as lunch but first we feed her what we're eating and then try and get "her" food in her too. She doesn't eat snacks through the day if we offer them. I've even tried a cookie and she'll try a little and the feed the rest to the dog. She's just not interested in eating.

A Mom that I work with gave me some advice when we started trying Sadie on solids. She said food fights are just not worth the effort because you won't win. They will eat when they're hungry and if they don't like it, they don't like it. You can try it again later but at the time don't fight with her about it. I've taken that advice and ran with it otherwise I would be sick with worry all the time.

She's growing and staying on the same curve she's always been on for height and weight percentiles so I guess she's getting enough although I seriously feel like she eats nothing.

    I feel ya!

Yep, sounds like Bailey, I tried giving her a cookie once also, she licked it then threw it away.  She is such a horrible eater.  Good luck with your little girl, she's a cutie!

  • Thank you! Baily is quite the little angel herself!

  • My DS is not a good eater either, but things have gotten a little better. Did your DD have reflux? My DS has lots of weird food aversions and my pedi thinks its because reflux made eating uncomfortable in the past (and maybe even currently) and he has some negative associations with food. My son also licks things and spits them out all.the.time. strange I agree. Pedi said its not a bad thing, that tasting is his way of experimenting and its better that he does that than not try it at all. I try hard to be really nonchalant about the whole eating thing, because I know pushing things just makes it worse. Sometimes I even leave the room (but stay where I can still keep an eye on him). I also try to give him foods he likes so he will learn to enjoy eating, but its hard to not give him a healthier variety of foods. Does your DD drink a ton of milk? Ive been trying to cut down on my DS's milk consumption because I think he'd rather drink his calories than eat and want him to want to eat more. Also, my kiddo does better with smaller more frequent meals so thats something you could try. GL!
