When did you start rice cereal?

Is there a reason (i.e., early if your LO had reflux, etc)?  How much did you start with - quantity and how many times in a day?  When during the day?  How did you increase?  Over what amount of time?

Re: When did you start rice cereal?

  • We started at 5 months, once every couple of days. At first we followed the directions and made it very runny. Then we increased the amount of cereal and now it is more like oatmeal.

  • Riley has reflux and after four Drs told us "start him early it will help" we started at 5 months two weeks only to have it make his reflux worse! UGG!

we started once a day with just a table spoon. then after 3 weeks went to twice a day and now are at three times a day. i give him a big jar (stage 2) now, sometimes he finishes it and sometimes he doesn't.

  • 4.5 months. We did oatmeal cereal though, i was worried rice cereal would constipate him. We just made the amount the box said, i used BM so the taste would be familiar. He loved it
  • we also started early - 4 months - ryan was a horrible barfer...never was diagnosed with reflux but would always barf up a lot of his BM.  We mixed with BM too --- pretty runny at first (like it wouldn't stay on the spoon) and then thickened it up pretty rapidly.  I think I was giving it to him at his noon-ish feeding at first....  either that or first thing in the morning and topping off with a nursing session.
Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.

  • We started at 4 months per Pedi. But my SIL started at 6 wks with the rice cereal in the bottle per Pedi for niece's awful reflux. It was the only way to get her to keep anything down. I don't remember the exact amts from when I babysat but I do remember her Pedi gave her instructions that we all followed.

  • We started at a little after 4 months.  The best advice I have heard is "ask the baby" if they are ready. Around 4 months, mix up a little of runny cereal and given A a bite. If he likes it (or is at least intrigued by it), it's time. If not, put it away and try in another week or two.

Isabel has always LOVED it.  Zoe was over with Emily (who is 2 days younger) and tried it last week (at 5.5m) and she hated it and had no interest.  Leave it up to them- they know when it's time!
