DD1 and I were rear ended today at a red light by a guy who was going pretty fast (I would guess around 30 or 35??). He said he accidentally stepped on his accelerator instead of brake - what??
At what point do we replace that car seat?? Also, DD2's carseat base was in the car as well - do we need to replace that too??
Thanks for any advice.
Oh, and we were both fine, although I hit my head either on the window or the seat belt thing up by the head rest. It hit right where my sunglasses band was and I had a hooooorrible head ache for a few hours.
Re: In an accident today - do we need to replace the car seat??
if his doesn't cover it yours should.
Definately replace the seat. I would check with a car seat safety expert about the base (really no idea on that one, but I would guess not, as long as it is structurally sound). The seat needs to attach correctly to the base, but still it might be good to ask (check your local PD or fire dept for an installation certified person; they will know).
The seat is a no-brainer b/c you cannot see if there are micro-fissures inside the seat itself. Any accident, especially ones that you are feeling the physical effects from, is one to replace the car seat. Buy what you need and submit to the insurance company, or contact your insurance company and see how they prefer to handle it.
But if they say it is not covered, replace anyway and chalk it up to being cautious and not careless. Glad no one was seriously hurt!
We had this happen to us at the beginning of July. The other guy's insurance company is paying for a new carseat/base, stroller, and for my $50 worth of groceries we lost due to being transported to the hospital and the car being towed.
I'm glad that you guys are okay, but please get yourself checked out, if you haven't done so already. I thought I was okay, too, but I do have permanent damage to my back and knee. Needless to say, we will be going after his ins. co. for damages.
How bad was the damage to your car? Were you pushed into the car in front of you?
Yes, get yourself to a doctor. You'd be surprised at long it can take sometimes for some of these injuries to present themselves! Plus if you hit your head at all, better safe than sorry.
Actually, you have to meet criteria before your seat will be replaced. At least that is what we were told, and we didn't meet any criteria.

Thanks for all your advice.
SuperCuteBenz - thank you for that link. I'm wondering if since I hit my head and I'm pretty sure it's at least bruised, if this would count for that one bullet. Or does it need to be an official injury documented by a Dr.?? I'll look into it...
Also, this is the second minor/moderate accident that the base has been through. We use the LATCH system with it so I bet it would be worth replacing that as well.
Thanks again!
