Adoption

Poll: Your Adoption Cost

I've been thinking about the cost of adoption for awhile-and while we are applying for grants it still seems so unfair that we all have to pay so much to adopt.  I'm wondering how our costs compares to others.  Here's a poll-this should include HS and potential travel.

Re: Poll: Your Adoption Cost

  • Again, I ask...where is everyone getting these cheap adoptions?

If your scale is topping at 30k....someone is getting a skewed view of adoption costs.  I rarely see one below 30k.  And I am on lots of different adoption sites with situations listed.

  • I did this poll awhile back. Adoptions on the lower end of the fee scale tend to be foster-adopt or kinship adoptions.

The fees associated with the services provided for the adoption of Grant were higher than average but under 30k - I think it rounded off some where around 28k.

Typically, the average fees would have been around $15-20K but we live in NJ and the birth state was NY - both of the lawyers were based in NYC (right there, the legal fees were much higher including their travel). Maybe next time our legal fees will not be as high.

Sometimes though - you get what you pay for. Not saying that adoptions SHOULD cost a lot but the services that you pay for all benefit someone in the process. I'm not sure that 'cheap adoptions' is necessarily the first priority - at least for us.

  • Ours will end up being right around $15k, including homestudy, both sets of legal fees, profile costs, incidentals and the living expenses for the birthmother, no agency.

Our second one will only be $2-3k for legal fees and travel, no new homestudy, no living or medical expenses, no agency.

  • We are quickly approaching the $20K mark, but are still just under w/ costs payable to investigator shortly and a few more odds and ends to tie up b/f finalization!
  • Our agency does a sliding scale .... anyone making under 50,000 has a flat fee of 6,000 for their adoption plus about 1,000 in lawyer fees after placement ... but that's done on our own.

The reason we chose our agency was because it's less than an hour from our house, it's cheaper, and if an adoption match falls through they don't charge any more at any time ... you just get put back on the list to adopt. Plus, they set up your fees to where we paid 1,500 for the HS, then once we get on the waiting list (should be this next month sometime) we'll pay another 1,500 and then once we get placed we have 6 months to pay the last 3,000 (aside from our lawyer fees).

We got lucky and DH's work pays back 3,000 of our costs ... so in the end our adoption will cost in the 4,000 area!!

  • We will spend worse case $7,000 best case $4,000. We only pay for the exspenses here. We are doing private IA from foster care.
  • ok.  Can you share your agency info with me.  Because clearly we are in the wrong ballpark.

PM me if you want to share.
