We took in this kitten and I gave her some dewormer as a precaution. DS plays with her all the time. Well today while cleaning the litter box I noticed a 1 inch round worm in her poop. Should I call the pediatrician? I'm not sure how easy it is for people to get these and am very concerned for DD and DS. Not sure what to do next.

Re: Sh!t kitten has worms
This. You essentially have to eat their poo to contract anything. Just make sure you wash your (and DS's) hands after playing with kitty or before he eats or has a snack.
Hmm...I kinda want to say that it might be unlikely. Even if somehow DS ate part of the tapeworm, that part of the tapeworm is dead. I could be wrong, but just trying to ease your fears. I guess I just assumed it was tapeworm, but I guess you're not really sure. If it is a tapeworm those are usually spread by eating fleas I believe. Again, I could be wrong.
Yopu should take the kitten in for appropriate deworming. It has been my experience that many over-the-counter deworming medications (usually pyrantel) are underdosed and/or the pattern of use recommended on the package in inappropriate.
The dewormer used for tapeworms (praziquantel) is not sold OTC to my knowledge. Even if it were, I would be concerned about dose and matching the dewormer to the life cycle of the parasite. If it is tapes, then you need to have the kitten on flea control. Do not bother with the cheaper flea meds - they are frequently toxic resulting in seizures and are ineffective. Flea collars are useless. Also, ingestion of tape eggs in not enough to start an infection. Rather, the eggs have to be eaten by an intermediate host first - like a flea.
As for you and the kids - general hygeine is adequate to prevent parasites from being passed from pets to humans. Get the kitten dewormed appropriately, sanitize the LB and use hood hygeine. If you are concerned about your kids (fever you mentioned) you should discuss it with your pedi.
