Rice Heating Pad?

Last night at my birthing class, the nurse was telling us about things women bring into the hospital with them to help during labor such as: music, massage items, etc. She said one thing you can do is put rice in a fabric type bag and then heat it in the microwave and it helps a lot to soothe pain. Does anyone know anything about these or how to make one?

Re: Rice Heating Pad?

  • I think you can just put rice in a tube sock, but you might not be that ghetto-fabulous!~ Haha

  • They talked about these at our birthing class as well.  She suggested taking a new tube sock and filling it with rice and sewing the end shut.  I'm sure you can think of something a little more creative with the same idea in mind Wink

  • Yes! My mom has a commercially made one, and she loves it. I would assume that it would be pretty easy to make: just get some cotton fabric and sew the rice in the material like a pillow.
  • Our Bradley instructor gave them to the class. She made them by filling up a long tube sock with rice and just tied the end off, but you could be more fancy and sew it up if you wanted.

  • I have a heating bag like this - think its made with wheat berries though, not rice. The "magic bag" infomercial sells them. It works really well.

not hard to make - just cut a square of fabric, fold in half, sew two of the ends, fill it, then sew the last end. Make sure you sew it a few times around because you don't want the seam to burst.

  • I have several, my grandma makes them

She uses 2 layers of flannel, sews it into the size pouch she needs, fills 2/3 full of white rice and sews them shut.

  • They are awesome and really easy to make (or you can buy them at just about any spa-type store).  You can use a tube sock or sew one - flannel and terry cloth ar ethe best materials to use.

BTW, make sure you use "real" rice - my sister made one with Minute rice.... bad idea.  There was just enough moisture and heat in the microwave to puff it up lol.

  • Yes! My mom made one for my grandma! You can also put some dried lavender in for a relaxing aromatherapy Smile

This is exactly what we did with ds. it is the best heating pad ever! We still use the rice sock method.

  • It also works great for cold packs too. I keep rice baggies in my freezer for times we need to ice injuries and such.
  • These are sold in stores, I bought one from CVS (I work there). But, it basically looks like a tube sock, but it has two straps on the ends and it can be used for hot or cold therapy. I use it sometimes for my back pain and really bad round ligament pain. I'm sure it's cheaper to make it (it costs about $10), but I'm not that savvy...lol!
