REFLUX MOMS WHO THICKEN FORMULA -- Come In!

I am finally thickening formula with rice (and hope to try oatmeal once I see no reaction). I have some questions!!  We started Prevacid and stopped Zantac --- still waiting for it to work.

I am adding 3 Tablespoons of rice cereal to 6 oz of formula five times a day.  What ratio do you use???

Do you cut your nipples into Xs?  I tried Y cut from Avent, Browns, Playtex --- they don't work.

Can my LO handle 15 Tablespoons of rice cereal per day??????  Will she having trouble pooping???

Last Question -- Will thickened formula work with Dr. Browns bottles????

  • I use drop ins.  I use 2 tbs per 5 oz, in every bottle.  I use fast flow.  Any more than that clogs.  I forgot to look at how old your LO is, but adding normal rice cereal in a bowl has also helped the reflux.  And, L is on Zantac (has been since birth).  I wonder if 3tbs is clogging the nipple.
  • That is the ratio I use. We don't give quite as many ounces though bc he just spits that back up. He only gets 4 ounce bottles but he does eat three meals a day.

Your LO is eating five six ounce bottles - she is a hungry monkey. You are going to just have to see what happens.

We use the Gerber Nuk bottles. They were the only ones that worked for us when we added cereal. We use Beechnut cereal.

  • I add/ed about 3/4T per 4 oz bottle.  DS still does not take more than 4-5 oz at a time.  Give it time. We did have to make the wholes on Level 2's a little larger.  Though we didn't X-cut them.  I just used an ice pick to stretch the hole a bit. We use Earth's Best Oatmeal.  We now only thicken his bed time bottle. This helps things stay down a little over night.  It really was trial and error.  The meds will take up to 2 weeks to get fully into their systems.  I have a ridiculous reflux knowledge- my niece was our GI's (we see the same pedi Gi) worst reflux case ever.  At least according to the GI.  She had major FTT issues.  At least we don't have that.  Let me know if you have any other questions.
  • We do 1 tsp per oz.  We use Dr Brown's bottles and use the level 4 nipples.  The Y was pretty messy for DD.  If you thicken it too much I could see the venting system getting clogged in the Dr Brown's and being hard for your LO to eat but we have no problem with them and the amount we are putting in.

  • I also don't know how other's mix it the cereal in but we use this and it works amazingly well!
  • We just shake the bottle for mixing and it works well.

We did this- but it created too many bubbles. Bubbles = extra gas which = more puke.  In my house at least.
