Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Does your baby understand english?

I don't know if she's way behind or what with this, but I figured out yesterday that K understands English!! Normally, to get her to clap, I clap. Well, I was telling my friend that she can clap and she started clapping!! Then I asked her to wave, and she waved...I asked her to blow a kiss, and she made her kiss noise! I thought she was just doing what we did, but now, she does what we say!! The only other thing she's been doing like this is when I say "Where's the cat?" She looks around. Maybe she's a genius..... or maybe I need to start reading more of that what to expect book, haha.

  • Try "Where's Mama?" or "Where's Dada?"  DS will look around the room to find us, it's really cute.  It took longer for him to understand mama though, at first he would look at his feet, his hands, the cat, anywhere but me.

  • I think Brooke understands some things.  The other day we were playing with her laugh and learn puppy and he went, "So big!" She immediately threw her arms up in the air. Usually when we do it with her we put our arms up so we figured she just follows our lead. Now she can do it just by us saying it. She also looks at you if you say her name and will look around the room if you say "dada" or "mama" depending on who has her.
  • DS definitely understands some things. If we ask where the dog is, he looks for him until he finds him. If we ask where the light is, he'll look up at the ceiling to the light. If we ask where certain toys are, he'll grab the one we're talking about. Other times it's hit and miss, but I definitely think he understands certain words. It was strange when I realized he actually knew what I was saying.
  • That's a normal time to learn this.

Usually by a year they should be able to understand what you're saying (at least a few things).

  • Oh he understands "ba ba"!  I just have to whisper it and he begins whining and crawling frantically to the kitchen to get one!
  • I think she's a genius! Smile I don't think DD is quite there with understanding English, but I'll have to give it a whirl tonight when I get home from work.
  • What language did you think she was going to understand? We are English speaking parents so yes, when they were babies my kids understood English. They understand and respond before they can speak. That's how language development and comprehension works.
  • Isn't that so awesome when you see your LO can understand you? I noticed within the last month especially our DD is like a sponge and knows so many words now- mama, dada, doggy, so big, splash, dance, milk, kiss, etc. I think 9-11 months is when they really start surprising you with how much they know!

Are you taking my question seriously? I have no words. Maybe try not taking everything so literally. However, dh speaks Spanish to her as well, FYI.

Gosh, you just sound like such a bittch. Not sure if that was your intent or if you honestly thought I was a moron who didn't know that their child would in fact one day understand- it's just that she just started understanding our requests and that's new to me.

Wow, you really have it all figured out, don't you? Confused

Star- Emilie has gotten sassy with me too over something similar.  That is just how she rolls.

Everyone else understood what you meant!

  • Either Leo is ignoring us or he doesn't really understand anything yet.

Although now that I say that, he has started to crawl up to us when we say "come here Leo!" But we also hold our hands out so I'm not sure if he's responding to the words or the gestures.

Sounds really cute though! I'm jealous :)
