circumcision

Hello,

Did you have your baby boy circumscised? ?I'm unsure whether to have it done or not. ?I've been reading it's becoming less common.

Thanks!

Re: circumcision

  • If we have a boy, I am letting DH choose.  He doesn't want to, so there's my answer!

  • My husband and I had a hard time deciding as well. After lots of discussion we decided since the majority of people are still doing it we would as well so that our son would feel just as normal as other boys his age. Also, we wanted him to look like his father so having him circumcised was the way we went. Good luck with your decision.
  • nope, we decided its a totally unnecessary procedure

    I agree!

My DH is not circumcised and we both believe it is completely unnecessary.  I have never understood the purpose for it.  It is a cosmetic procedure that people have done to their son's so they look like everyone else in the shower room at school.  My husband was never embarrassed about his foreskin and actually felt sorry for the guys that didn't have it.  I am very against this..  And the hygiene reason... don't we wash the rest of our body well enough?  DH will teach our son how to wash his stuff... DH hasn't had any problem since I have known him.

  • If we have a boy, we're definitely NOT circumcising.  My husband IS and it's caused problems for him.. so he really really doesn't want to do that to our son should we have one.

  • We are going to. I left it up to my husband to decide and he told me that he definitely wants to. There are a few reasons why:

    * My husband was in the Army for 8 years and said that when guys joined the Army (or maybe it's the infantry) and weren't circumcised, they would get circumcised because the Army requires it for hygiene reasons. Of course, it makes sense that you're not going to have great hygiene if you're in the infantry at certain points and they don't want to have to deal with that.

    * My husband is circumcised and probably wants his son to be like him.

    * It's easier to contract STDs if you're not circumcised.

My best friends Fiance has been in the army & marines for almost 20 years and he said this is false.  He said " they would counsel the member on cleanliness and hygiene and no they would not require it due to it being discriminatory"

I really hope you wouldn't circumcise your son based on the Army.

I personally feel it's a decision my son (should I have one) should make on his own, what if he never chooses to join the army (even if that were true?)

LOL. You're calling my husband a liar. Thanks.

  • No, I'm not.  I'm just saying that perhaps he was given false information?  Regardless of what the policy is, that isn't really a good reason to circumcise in my opinion.

  • I dont think there is a right or wrong answer here. It is a very personal decision and whatever you decide to do for your son will be the right choice :)

I asked my husband about it again and he said that it's not a "policy." It's just what ends up happening. For infantry men. Your friend's fiance may not actually be in the infantry like my husband was. I'm sure you can understand that if a man isn't able to wash his stuff for three months and ends up using his wipe from his meal to wipe his stuff, he might have wished he had gotten a circumcision.

Regardless of whether or not my son ends up following in his daddy's and granddaddy's footsteps, we'll opt for circumcision for hygiene and other reasons. We do, by the way, think that hygiene problems is a good enough reason. We're talking about guys.

  • we didn't have it done. when we researched it we found it wasn't very common on the west coast (at least compared to some other areas of the country) and it isn't common worldwide. there are minor pros and cons but we couldn't find a convincing medical reason. we don't have a cultural or social reason to do it, so our son is uncircumcised.

  • Hi, I'm super late on this...

DS is intact.  I didn't want to do it and DH REALLY didn't want to do it.  He is circumcised and isn't concerned about DS "matching" him.  The majority of our friends have boys and the majority of those boys are intact.  My BF is a NICU nurse at St. V's and she said that about half of the babies have it done and half do not.  (All three of her boys are intact too.)
