when feeding/diapering at night...

What is everyones plan for lighting at night when feeding, diapering, soothing baby once at home? Obviously only if LO is sleeping in parents room. Do you turn on the nightstand lamp, overhead lights, or just get a nightlight to keep things sorta dark? Just curious if we need to purchase a nightlight....does the light stimulate baby too much or is that a good thing??

Re: when feeding/diapering at night...

  • we have a little light but it stimulated him too much so I just use the nightlight

  • The first 3 nights that DD was home, we slept with a light on...We were afraid that we couldn't see her with the lights off (haha).  After that, if she fussed we would go out and turn the hall light on so it gave us enough light to see her, but not so much that it hurt her eyes.
  • DS wakes up fully anyway, so I just use the lamp.
  • We got a dimmer switch at Lowe's and it was awesome.  It was less than $20.  You plug your lamp into it, then it has a dimmer switch you can control with your foot.  It was great when my hands were full trying to put DS in his PNP and the light was still on.  Also, I would put on really dim when I woke up to BF him, so he got the idea between day and night.  DS STTN now, but I still use it when I put him to bed.

  • The toilet in our bathroom was in a separate room so we used that light w/ the door cracked

  • We are totally in a transitional stage.  In G's room, we have a night light and our ceiling fan/light is on a dimmer.  If I change her in there, I don't even turn on the light.  I will turn on the hall light and keep the door ajar.  That has worked ok for us.  But, we normally change her in our bedroom because I also feed her in bed at the moment.  In our room, we turn our bathroom light on and keep the door ajar.  If I didn't have that light, there is no way I'd clean her poop well.

  • The first few nights we slept with the lights on, just like someone else said... we were too nervous! Then we turned on a hall light, and now we are down to a nightlight. I definitely need that for changing... in fact, sometimes I'm worried I can't see enough even with it to get her clean or notice a rash, and it doesn't bother her at all. Neither did sleeping with the lights on, really.

  • I use the TV.  I really wish I had a nightlight for LO's room so I could see better when I am getting him out of his crib.
  • The light from the street lamps outside our room is enough for me, but DH always turns on the hall light.

  • overkill, but we have 3 nightlights in LO's room, 2 decorative and all 3 not very bright (2 trains to match the decor, and then the glow off the angelcare monitor) we keep those on all the time, and that is enough to feed him by, but they dont seem to keep him awake.  For diaper changes we turn on the bathroom light which is across the hall from his room.
  • i use either a lamp with a soft light bulb in it (a lamp we dont use often bc we have a ceiling fan w/ a light on it)- or i use the tv

i have been sleeping in the living room with DD so dh gets some sleep and i am more comfortable in there for right now after my csection

  • We have a nightlight in our bedroom for this purpose.

  • I change DD's diaper in full light in her room before I feed her so that she's awake enough to actually feed, and then turn on the TV in our bedroom for the actual feeding. The TV never even phases her, provides more than enough light, and gives me something to keep me awake. She always falls back asleep during feeding, so the system works well for us.
