Pet peeve; "mean" baby nicknames

I never thought it would bother me, but I find myself strangely defensive of my LO and confused as to why it's okay to call a baby a derogatory name in a loving way, and it somehow be "cute".

It's petty, I know, but I don't appreciate people (MIL, esp) lovingly calling my baby "stinkpot", "turkey", "stinker", "troublemaker", etc. She is newborn... she is only perfect and innocent! Anyone else have this pet peeve, or am I just ridiculous?! Wink

  • LOL. YES. I hate when people say that DD is fussy. She is a very good baby and never fusses unless she needs something. I just want to smack them and say "she is not fussy-she just sh!t herself, tyvm."

  • I call DS Mr. Monster because he's always growling and grunting... I think it's cute. I would be kind of annoyed if someone called my LO "troublemaker" though... and I've always thought that "turkey" was a strange nickname.
  • Awww man, you would hate what I call my baby...Her nicknames include "Stinky Potato".

Could it be that you don't appreciate it when its MIL using the names?  Would it bother you if DH did it?

  • I don't think it's weird. But I guess that's because DH calls DD Ms. Crankypants. But it's a term of endearment. Do you hate it simply because it's comign from your MIL? I know I'm that way. It's ok for me to say something but not for her. Just wondering. Other than that then yeah I think it's a bit silly. =)
  • I don't find it defensive as long as they mean it in a cute way. For example DH calls J his "Little Brat" or "Monkey" and once in a while he'll say "You little troublemaker"
  • Both DH and my older DD yell at me all the time for calling LO thunder thighs!!!
  • I HATE nicknames like that.  Someone on another board was going on and on about how you should not tell your older child they are being "bad"because that is "low class", but meanwhile called her kid "little stinker".  I was amazed that she thought that stinker was "nice".

THIS!! DS is the same way... FI's youngest daughter always asks why he cries all the time. Her mom is having a baby anyday now... she's in for a surprise!!

  • We call DD stinker because sometimes she is a little stinky :)
  • Clarification; it is a little different if you develop them yourself... maybe you guys are right.... maybe it is more of a MIL/ other people pet peeve Embarrassed

Also, I think Mrs. Crankypants is cute, if she's really being cranky. Maybe part of the problem is that my LO doesn't even stink yet.... LOL!

  • It doesn't really bother me.  I call DD "mush" because she just kind of sits there like a blob.  It would probably annoy me if my mil did it b/c...well she's my mil and mostly everything she does annoys me.

Although I agree with pp.  Fussy annoys me especially when she's fussing for a reason, like she's hungry or wet.

  • I call my LO a stinker, but to each her own. MIL shouldn't call your baby something you don't like.

  • I hate it when ppl call any LO "chubby" or "fat" - even if it is cute and acceptable to be chubby as a baby. I admit I am very sensitive to that because of my weight, but I don't want my DD to have any hangups. LOL

We call DS "Mr. Crankypants" all the time, LOL!  Hey, if the name fits...

But yeah, DH and I calling him a slightly "mean" nickname is one thing, I would probably a little annoyed by someone else (like MIL) doing so.

I try to get DH to not do this. MIL calls DD "nosey" when she looks around. Grrrrr...
