I never thought it would bother me, but I find myself strangely defensive of my LO and confused as to why it's okay to call a baby a derogatory name in a loving way, and it somehow be "cute".
It's petty, I know, but I don't appreciate people (MIL, esp) lovingly calling my baby "stinkpot", "turkey", "stinker", "troublemaker", etc. She is newborn... she is only perfect and innocent! Anyone else have this pet peeve, or am I just ridiculous?! ![]()
Re: Pet peeve; "mean" baby nicknames
Awww man, you would hate what I call my baby...Her nicknames include "Stinky Potato".
Could it be that you don't appreciate it when its MIL using the names? Would it bother you if DH did it?
THIS!! DS is the same way... FI's youngest daughter always asks why he cries all the time. Her mom is having a baby anyday now... she's in for a surprise!!
Clarification; it is a little different if you develop them yourself... maybe you guys are right.... maybe it is more of a MIL/ other people pet peeve
Also, I think Mrs. Crankypants is cute, if she's really being cranky. Maybe part of the problem is that my LO doesn't even stink yet.... LOL!
It doesn't really bother me. I call DD "mush" because she just kind of sits there like a blob. It would probably annoy me if my mil did it b/c...well she's my mil and mostly everything she does annoys me.
Although I agree with pp. Fussy annoys me especially when she's fussing for a reason, like she's hungry or wet.
We call DS "Mr. Crankypants" all the time, LOL! Hey, if the name fits...
But yeah, DH and I calling him a slightly "mean" nickname is one thing, I would probably a little annoyed by someone else (like MIL) doing so.
I try to get DH to not do this. MIL calls DD "nosey" when she looks around. Grrrrr...
