Breastfeeding

New Mom... I have a question

My little one is 9 days old... She spent a few extra days in the hospital and was given a bottle so we are transitioning to nursing from the breast... When she nurses, she typically only nurses from one side and won't take the other... After she does that- do I have to pump from the other side or is it ok to wait until the next feeding... I am so confused with the whole BFing thing...My supply has been great when I pump and I can get 5 oz from both sides for a total of 10 oz in 10-12 minutes... thanks!

Thanks!

Re: New Mom... I have a question

  • Short answer is No.

When you pump from the other side you are telling your body to keep making more milk because your LO needs it! Essentially, you are creating an oversupply by pumping after every feeding. If you are feeling engorged, you can pump off a little bit to relieve it, but don't drain the breast.

It's still early at 9 days, but by 12 weeks your body will know exactly how much milk to make and you won't feel engorged on one side after a feeding.

  • I have always only done one side per feeding. and never pumped the other side.

  • I've always offered both breasts at each feeding, and DD will eat both 90% of the time.

I pump first thing in th emorning and freeze that milk.  Good luck!
