At my infant care class last night the instructor said that we should only hand-wash bottles and nipples, as they will "break down" in the dishwasher and our baby will end up sucking up plastic.... This was news to me, and I'm skeptical. Can anyone confirm its true or verify that this advice is BS?

uh huh. by your instructor's theory, you'd better not sterilize those bottles in boiling water either. that could cause plastic breakdown. right?
i've been a mom for 3 months now & i can't count on two hands how many times i've gone to my more seasoned mommy friends w/ stuff like this just to have them snicker & laugh.
i can't speak for all bottles but the born free ones we use clearly state that they're dishwasher friendly. and since they're BPA free as far as i'm concerned, its safe. honestly there's a part of my convinced that these baby experts teaching these classes would have us all wrapping our infants in bubble wrap if they could.
LOL. After handwashing bottles every day you will change your mind. I put them in the dishwasher every other day. I can't remember the last time I hand washed a bottle or nipple.
hahaha, she actually DID say NOT to sterilize the bottles! I think the lady was off her rocker and felt like she needed to come up with some "surprising" information so people wouldn't feel like they wasted their money.
