The Burn of Follistim

I'm on stim day 4 with Follistim (currently at 4 vials of 75ius) and holy crap does it burn!  Any tips on taking some of the burn away?  My IVF nurse said to let it sit on the counter for 5 minutes before drawing it up, but that didn't help.  The prescription insert said to let the vials come to room temp first.  Has anyone tried this?  If so how long does it take to get to room temp and does it work?  I'm doing subq injections with a regular syringe & needle instead of the pen.

By the way, I'm new to this board - so hello!  I used to post on TTC 12 months+ but lately I've found this board to be more insightful and helpful.  Good luck to everyone and thanks for any advice!

Re: The Burn of Follistim

  • I always let the vials come to room temp (technically, if not mixed they do not need to be refrigerated anyway if kept in a cool dark place). Then make sure the alcohol is dry as well before injecting ( that was a bad of mine all the time - oowy) Also, after mixing the drugs, switch over to a fresh needle - if you haven't been doing so.

  • The only time Ive noticed burning is if I dont let it warm up or shoot it in to fast. I would let it sit a good 20 or hold in your palm 5 or so minutes to warm up.

  • I used the Follistim pen and didn't have any stinging.  Sorry I can't help...but I wanted to stop in to say hi, good luck, and welcome!
  • I take it out of the fridge 30 minutes before injection.  It burns for about 5 seconds but that is it.  I would try this.

    Good luck!!

  • Thanks for the advice ladies.  I'm going to let the vials sit for at least 20 minutes today and see if that helps.  I think I've been injecting slowly, but maybe I should go even slower.  I used Menopur with an IUI and it did sting, but not like the Follistim.  The Menopur felt like alcohol on a cut, the Follistim feels like a really fresh and deep bruise and hurt so bad it made me cry yesterday.  Of course I'm using a ton more Follistim than Menopur so the hurt is longer too.  Thanks again!

  • Yikes! My nurse mentioned that she should have gotten me follistim vials so I can mix it with the menopur and do one shot, but I think next time i will tell her I will stick with the pen if the vials are that bad.

  • I also use the follistim pen and let it set out for 20 minutes before injecting. There have been a couple of times when I have been in a rush and unable to let it out that long and it did sting for a few seconds.  Hopefully by just letting it warm up a bit you won't feel such a sting. GL!
  • Sorry, I've only ever used the pen. Like others, though, I do let my cartridges get to room temp before I inject. Hopefully this helps you, too.

  • i always take it right out of the fridge but the only time it will burn is if i don't let the alcohol dry first.  but i use the pen . . .

    Good Luck :)

  • Once I open the vial I don't refrigerate it since it can be left out at room temp for 30 days opened.  It never burns for me if it isn't cold.  This should DEFINATELY help!
