Trying to Get Pregnant

Whoops. Just ticked off my boss.

I have a pretty good relationship with him but I just really irritated him. He asked me to see if one of my co-workers could come in during the co-worker's vacation. I frowned and hesitated.

When he asked me what was wrong I said, "well, it's vacation". Ooooops. He said "Does everyone know how lucky they are to have a job? Has anyone looked at the industry lately?"

Re: Whoops. Just ticked off my boss.

  • Ssshhh Monkey...move slowly out of your bosses office...feel better?

  • Still....people need to enjoy their vacations!  I know they should be lucky to have a job and all that, but that doesn't mean they should be worked to the bone!

But, alas, that's an arguement you can't win with your boss.

  • Um, what if they were on vacation in another country or something?  Obviously your boss never would have said that.  Vacation is vacation.  If your boss needed them there, then he never should have approved the time off.  If someone called me while I was on vacation to work, I'd be pissed.  So, is he going to call you while you're out on maternity leave???

I don't know...then a co-worker of mine argued with him right afterwards and was just called into his office. Damn. Now he's going to be grumpy for the rest of the day!

  • Wooops. I would totally have said the same thing though. I mean if it's vacation it's vacation!

  • Sounds like your boss needs a midol or something.

A vacation is a vacation. If it was granted then they should not be asked to return to work.

  • Isn't vacation earned so we have the right to use it as long as the boss approved ahead of time?

No worries Monkey, I would have said the same thing. And it sucks that he came to you to tell the coworker to come in. Let your boss be the bad guy and call her/him in.

I agree. Doesn't he ever take vacation?

  • I hate the days when I know my boss is in a bad mood.  I mostly hide in my office and avoid him at all costs.  I think you had a valid point Monkey.  Wait, why exactly do YOU have to be the bearer of bad news?

  • I would have said the same thing.  I agree that people are fortunate to be employed (at any time) but I also think that people earn time off and should not have that held over them.  When I first started (6 years ago) at my current job they would constantly call me when I was on vacation asking questions, wanting me to look into stuff from home.  Now I just completely remove myself from the phone and computer when on vacation so nobody can contact me!

I'm ALWAYS the bearer of bad news. The only thing I haven't had to do is fire someone. Thank god.

Unfortunately, vacation time isn't really honored here the way it is in other companies. My boss works his ass off, usually twice as hard on his vacations. It's really a shame, but it's just the way it is.

  • That sucks that you have to be the one telling people bad news.  That would really stress me out.  Here, we are expected to be in constant contact over vacations, but it's not too bad.  Usually someone else picks up whatever you are supposed to be working on.  I feel pretty lucky about that.

  • In case anyone cares for an update; The coworker told him he was planning to be out of town. Bossman said that was cool and is letting it slide. (I can't help but feel like my reaction may have played a part in him letting it slide).

Your boss sounds like mine.  He doesn't hesitate to call someone on their vacation/personal days.  I think because when he takes personal time, he usually ends up coming into the office or at least calling each day to check in.  They need to realize folks need a vacation for a reason! haha ~*Which is why I Bump while Working haha*~

  • Yeah it's funny how people go "out of town" for vacations, right? Please.

I, however, would have responded just like you did and been similarly chagrined when it made the boss man mad.

  • You were right, Monkey, that's why he wanted you to do the dirty work!

My boss didn't even ask me and just put me on the schedule during the 1st week of my vacation.  When I spoke up, she said the schedule is done and if I want off I'd have to find my own coverage.  Because of the union and the written approval for the time I'd received in April, she had to fix it.
