Tell me about roseola

DD had a fever for several days last week, pretty high for her at times (102). She then had a night where she was just miserable and up all night. DH took her to the pedi last Tuesday and they said while her fever was high for teething, it was probably that because her mouth was a mess. Her fever broke and she seemed back pretty much to normal.

Monday morning she woke up with a rash on her tummy and thighs. We had her well baby check that day, so the doctor saw it. She said it looked like contact dermatitis and we had used a new sunscreen the day before, so we assumed it was a reaction to that. I used hydrocortisone on it, which did nothing. We gave her Benadryl (per the doctor's orders) when it was still bad yesterday. Today it seemed the same, then tonight (of course now that the office is closed) it got worse. It's all down her legs, on her tummy and arms. It's not bothering her or itching, and it dawned on me that she had a fever, then a rash a few days later. Does this sound like roseola to you? I'm going to call the pedi tomorrow morning, but do you think I should give her the Benadryl again or is it pointless if it is Roseola?

  • Here's a pic of what roseola looks like:

I know someone's LO had it on here, but I can't remember who.

  • Ashlyn just had that a few weeks ago. I took her to the Dr. and they thought it was just a virus, then the rash broke out. Everyone that saw her told me it was Roseola.  I thought it was a food allergy or contact rash, but it was all over her body. She acted totally normal the days the rash was around though, so it sounds very similiar.

I've had 2 other girlfriends whose children have had roseola over the past 6 weeks, must be in the air:)

  • Mason had it right around his first birthday.  He randomly had fevers at night for a few nights for a day or two.  I just thought maybe he was getting a cold or that it was teething.  Nothing ever came of it, except that he got a rash all over his belly right after the fever broke.  It went away very quickly and all was fine after that.  HTH!

  • It is going around right now, and what you describe sounds like roseola.  Unfortunately all you can do is treat the fever and let it run its course.  I hope it clears up and Ellie feels better soon.

  • Macy just had this 2 weeks ago.  She also had severe diarrhea for over a week and we were just about to have to get stool samples, but it finally went away.  She started with the diarrhea (never thought she had a fever, but she must have) and then broke into a rash on her face and legs, which over the course of a day spread to her entire body.  We took her to the pedi and they confirmed it was Roseola.  We gave her tylenol because her belly was upset, but the pedi said to give motrin or tylenol for fever.  Macy had a low grade fever (99-100.7 for a couple of days with the rash).  The rash completely resolved over 2 days and she didn't seem too bothered by it (no itching, etc.).
