Baby Names

boy names for a girl

It just so happens that the 2 names DH and I can agree on for our baby girl are boy names. Opinions please...

Brett (MN choices: Riley, Madison) or

Wesley (MN choices: Jane, Mae)

Which sounds best...if any? TIA!

Re: boy names for a girl

  • I've heard of girls with the name Brett beofre but never Wesley.

  • I like Brett for a girl. ?I don't like either middle name though- both are very trendy and overused, imo. ?Plus, Brett Riley sounds very masculine. ?I'd go with something very classic and feminine as a middle name.

    I don't like Wesley for a girl.

  • Veto for both.  Sorry.
  • YUCK! YUCK! and more YUCK!!! Those are totally boy names- why do that to your child since they're not even considered unisex. Just another reason it's so hard to name boys now days- my hubby would not even consider names that could be used on girls and the trend is growing. I wanted to name this baby Tyler or Wesley if it were a BOY.There are SOOOO many cute names for girls out there- I say keep at it!
  • I really don't like either for a girl, sorry. Aren't there ANY girl names that you like?

Try Britt. Wesley and Brett suck for a girl. People will be looking for a boy, expecting a boy, and then your pretty girl will stand up and be, yeah, it's me. I'm a girl with a boy name.

I'm sorry to be so harsh, but I really think it would be hard on a girl to have those names.

  • Those aren't even close to unisex names.  Yuck.  Please, for her sake, don't do it.

  • I def think of these as boys names- wouldn't want a daughter in a class with boys who have her same name
  • both are terrible for a girl. seriously.

  • I actually like Brett. Wesley is not unisex in my opinion. I'm not a fan of the middle name choices with Brett though. I think something more feminine would be better.

  • I did like the suggestion of Britt instead of Brett...and maybe you could go for Kelsey instead of Wesley. Just a thought!
  • yuck neither!
  • Well, if this one is a boy his name will be Wesley so I'm sorry, I'm not a fan of it for a girl. I like the idea of Britt or Kelsey. What about Lesley?
  • Neither.  Do you like any of your middle name choices enough to consider them as first names?  (FWIW, I don't even really like unisex names for girls, so I definitely have a problem with masculine names for girls.)
  • I have a girl friend named Brette with the "e"... makes it a bit more feminine.  I've always liked it that way.

  • I like Brett for a girl.?
  • I think both are too masculine for a girl, especially the traditional Wesley.

  • Wait- so with the name Brett you would use a boy middle name, too? Wow, at least balance it out with a girl name!

Anyway, I agree with those that said these sound like total boy names, not unisex names (and I do like several unisex names). I have heard of Brett for a girl but don't love it and it still sounds boyish to me. But if I had to choose, I would go with Brett over Wesley. Not even sure I like Wesley for a girl.

  • No.  Those are not girl names.  At all.  Especially Wesley.  Wesley Jane or Wesley Mae sounds like a transgendered person who got stuck halfway through.

And while I can *almost* see Brett for a girl, it would really, really need a super feminine middle name.  Brett Olivia, Brett Samantha, Brett Theresa are all *almost* okay.  (But they aren't really okay because Brett is a boy's name.)

  • I like Brett for a girl but not Wesley

This.  Have you thought about how you would have felt if your parents gave you a decidedly masculine name?  It's just not a nice thing to do to your child.

  • Wait, what?! This is just getting out of control. Those are definitely boy names. I think I'd have trouble not rolling my eyes if I heard of/met a girl IRL w/ either of those names.
  • Why aren't traditionally girl names good enough for your baby?  Would you consider naming a son Jane or Emily?
For the love of god, please don't name your daughter Wesley unless you want people to make fun of her name and assume it's a boy.

Are you tryingto make a pseudo feminist statement because I do not understand your reasoning.

I don't like either first names for a girl. They sound completely masculine, not "unisex" at all...

  • Both are very masculine. I think it's mean honestly. I would hate to be named Brett or Wesley.
  • Personally, I like girl names for girls, and boy names for boys.  There are a few that have been used interchangably lately, and it bothers me.  I remember there was a girl in my elementary school named Corey (and I was obsessed with the two Coreys when I was little, yes I'm showing my age), and EVERYONE thought she was a boy on the first day of school.  She had short hair, the whole bit.  Looking back, I feel bad.

Brett and Wesley are strictly masculine to me.  Sorry.  Maybe think of names that have a unisex nn?  (Josephine to Jo, or Michaela to Mike, or Alexandra to Alex ...)

  • ew no no no. Both are such strong male names..please don't ruin them by naming your little girl one of those. I feel the same way when people want to name their little boys girl names like Ashley and what not - it's just weird.

On the another note though - I like the middle names...can't you decide to go with one of those?

  • I can't imagine looking down at a beautiful baby girl and saying Wesley or Brett. I do not understand why people don't want beautiful  names for their beautiful daughters.

And you know that some mean kid is going to tell her that her parents really wanted a boy and that is how she got her name.

in the end, your kid, your business but I suggest you keep looking.

  • Brett is only vaugely unisex, Wesley is flat-out considered a boy's name. I'd keep looking.

    yep

  • My daughter is named Grayson so I say do either one.  If Hayden can be a girls name anything can.
  • Keep looking. The only name I like for a girl is Shane, but even then it needs a VERY feminine middle name to pull it off. My neice is Shane Elisabeth.

  • No.  Neither.  Keep thinking.  There are very few masculine names that I think are ok and the only one that comes to mind is Ryan.  There are so many good girl names out there, it's not fair to name a girl Brett or Wesley and have to let her deal with being teased.
  • I love boy names for girls, if we have a girl, she is definitely getting a boys name....most likely ryanne, or shayne, or jordan??? but i do like brette.
