Breastfeeding

? for those who block feed

I've noticed several ladies on here mention block feeding to manage oversupply/OALD...I believe that I also have a slight issue with oversupply and my LO isn't a big eater so sometimes he is full after one breast and I wind up pumping the other so I don't get engorged (and so I can have some extra milk to build a stash).  Even when he does feed on the other side, most of the time he doesn't drain it as well as the first side.  I would like to try block feeding to hopefully regulate my supply more so that it doesn't exceed his demand...however I just can't imagine offering only one breast per feeding b/c I think that I will get engorged and end up getting a plugged duct (which I've gotten a lot of...)  So those who are block feeding, did you experience engorgement/plugged ducts when you started?  If so was there anything you did that helped this?  TIA! :)

Re: ? for those who block feed

  • engorgement is part of the process. i did block feeding for 2-3 days. i would feed on the right for 4 hours then on the left for the next 4. the other breast gets engorged, and it signals your body to slow down production. i didn't get any plugged ducts, but i have had them before.

now, i feed one side per feeding with no engorgement. in the long run, block feeding will be good for you. if you don't take care of your oversupply/oald, then you are more likely to run into more engorgements and plugged duct problems.

  • I havent tried it, but I've done a lot of research on this, as I have the same issue.  According to Kellymom, you can hand express just enough milk to relieve the pressure in the side you arent using.  They also suggest taking a hot shower to express some of the extra milk (im not really sure who has time for this).  https://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/fast-letdown.html Try this site out.

  • I can't answer all of your questions, but I will say that I've been feeding on only one side for almost a month and haven't had any engorgement problems.  Yes, the side that she doesn't feed on does feel full, but my body seems to be regulating itself so that it is not uncomfortable.
  • I block fed for a number of months.  Engorgement is part of the process.  I did 2 to 3 hours blocks, the side I was not feeding on always leaked.  The leaking did relieve the full feeling.   I would not pump.  Pumping will make the problem worse.
