Dallas-Fort Worth Babies

I HATE that this is TACKY.....and I need your help

The tacky part:

Registering for or putting children's interests/clothing sizes on birthday invitations.

Not that I would do it....because I wouldn't. But it sure would help me out as a guest!!  I'm not one to not bring a gift.

Here's where I need some help.  There is a lady and her son in my weekly infant "My Gym" class.  I really like her.  She's been super sweet, outgoing and helpful since K and I joined 3 mos. ago.  Her son is turning 1 in a couple of weeks and she gave invites to everyone in the class (super cute Sesame Street invites if anyone wants ideas.....sorry....as usual, I babble).

THIS is where I need help.....

She specifically said to everyone, as she handed out the invites, please don't feel like you need to bring a gift, we all just want you to come and have fun.

Umm, sorry, no can do.....I bring gifts - I can't imagine not bringing a gift.  However, I know that this child does not "want" for anything (I can tell they are very well off).  What do you give a child turning one that you only really know from your 1 hour per week mommy and me classes?  DH suggested a $50 GC to Baby Gap or the like (I'm thinking......I don't know them that well to spend $50, but I don't want the gift to be lame).  Giving them a GC to our stores for a parents' night out has also crossed my mind....but it's their son's 1st bday, and that's a big deal.....so shouldn't it be about him?

If I've lost you along the way with my babbling, sorry....welcome to my mind.

If you've made it this far......bless your heart and patience...and, can you help with suggestions?

  • books - i love to give (and receive) books for kids birthdays - fun, educational and you can spend as much or as little as you want

  • I second the book idea, i would get a book and maybe the stuffed animal that goes with it?  I know they have a lot of those types of things at Barnes and Nobles
  • I am going to jump on the bandwagon as well and say books. You can never have too many books.

books again. Barnes and noble has their clearance section and it has great little kids books. This way you can get several since books are expensive.
  • What about a gift card for the family to the Dallas World Aquarium?
  • I agree with the book idea or something else I've recently discovered that G loves are the Melissa & Doug wooden puzzles. You can get them at Toys R Us but I have found them cheaper at Marshalls and TJ Max. He specifically likes the jumbo knob puzzles and are awesome when teaching them to identify animals, etc. You could maybe give a few books with one of these awesome puzzles.
  • Yup another vote for books here..He had really started taking to his books more lately.  You really can't go wrong with books.
  • haha...I hope you like the book idea.  Before I read anyone else's reply I was going to say books.  I get books for kids presents all the time and they're alwaya a hit.  I love those wooden M&D puzzles too (learning express has good ones, not sure if there's one of those around here).
  • I'm going to be the opposing voice. We say no gifts, although we put on the invite that if you would like to bring something we are collecting art supplies for Children's hospital. My children want for nothing. We have too much stuff. There's a reason I don't want gifts and I really don't want them. I don't say it, then wish someone brought something. Stuff takes time. It's encumber some.

If you feel you must take a gift - books, DVDs, or PJs are good.

  • :::slapping myself upside the head:::

    Thank you.

  • I'm like you, and hate to show up w/out something....but I also am always the mom that says no gifts please!! Being on both ends, I will say books as well. It's what I always take, and love for my kids to get. I firmly believe that kids absolutely cannot have too many books...and while I am constanlty going through toys, clothes, etc to donate...I never get rid of books (even if we have duplicates of them!!).
