thoughts on eating deli meat?

I've heard its ok, then I've heard its not.  What has your OB told you?  This isn't on a list at all that they gave me but I'd rather be safe than sorry, ya know?

Re: thoughts on eating deli meat?

  • on page 2 there is a post on this with a bunch of responses.... all in all it depends on the dr. everyone has a different opinion.

  • My Ob said it is totally fine. Eat it up.

    Just make sure its fresh/good.

  • My OB said yes, it's fine. ?Nearly everything you do carries with it some risk- I'm not going to live in a bubble. ?Get it from a reputable place, obviously.?

  • eat it :) its delish! oh and don't heat it....highly unlikely you will catch any listeria from it unless you are picking it up off the floor of a bathroom and knawing on it. I ate it alllll through my 1st and am loving it even more this time around....tuna too :)
  • My RE says no deli food (couldn't eat it during IF treatments either), but I haven't seen my OB yet.  This and high mercury fish are the only things they said not to eat (other than caffeine, alcohol, etc.).  However, I don't like deli food so I didn't eat it to begin with.
It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

  • sorry, didn't see the other post.  my bad.  I should have looked first.

yeah, that's what I've been told, just to make sure it's fresh.  I guess I'm nervous about having it at the cafe at work, think I'll just pass on that down there but if I was at Panera or something that might be different.

    thanks ladies!!!

  • My Ob's cool with it.  As a food scientist with macro background, I'll tell you you're just as likely to get Listeria from less-than-fresh milk as you are from less-than-fresh lunchmeat.  No one in their right mind's gonna tell pregnant women there's a risk from drinking milk.

Just make sure you're not letting lunch meat sit in the fridge for over 5 days, and make sure that the lunch meat you're eating from restaurants has been stored cold.

  • My doctor said it is fine to eat deli meat.  Everything in moderation is fine.  The only things my doctor said I couldn't have is alcohol and cigarettes.
  • I was told that while the risk is low for listeria to avoid deli meat

    Yes,  me too.

  • I've been avoiding it.

Yes, the risks of getting listeria are very low, but if you get listeria the consequences can literally be deadly.  Mercury in fish, while harmful in large doses, is not going to hurt the baby instantly.  Just like one glass of wine won't cause a miscarriage (not that I'm drinking wine!).  My opinion is just that moderation doesn't matter with deli meat, all it takes is one bad sandwich and I'm not willing to risk that.  JMO, not trying to judge others at all.

  • depends on your OB and your own decisions. ?I ate it throughout my last pregnancy. ?just made sure it was really fresh. ?
  • My OB said he wouldn't tell people who didn't want to eat it that they were doing the wrong thing but that he didn't think that listeria was an epidemic or anything so if I wanted to have a sammich once in awhile he wasn't going to stop me.

Driving your car can be deadly, too. ?Better pass up the keys. ?Mowing the lawn can be deadly, petting a dog can be deadly, plugging in a lamp can be deadly. ?Unless you're going to avoid everything that "can be deadly", it's rather silly to choose one little thing to fixate on. ?Outside of the Nest, most people have never heard of the 'lunch meat kills your baby' thing.

  • I heard about the lunch/deli meat outside of the nest/bump.

    I have been avoiding it.

Wanted to get others thoughts and opinions.

  • Eat. The. Meat.

As long as you're getting it from a reputable place, it should be fine. I didn't touch any meat when I was in Europe just because I didn't trust it. Now I have a deli sandwich at least once a week, if not twice. YUM!

  • Mine said to heat it first.  I don't like deli meat as it is, but if I did like it (or I suddenly start craving it), I'd probably eat it (without heating it) at as long as it came from a reputable place.

  • I think it's all what you and your DR decide. There is a danger with almost everything. Moderation is obviously key. I was told NO unless it was heated. honestly i don't want a hot sub sammy or deli sammy.... LOL... I have been trying to avoid them for now. i have takena  bite or two from my DH's but after my first tri is over I may consider being ok with it from time to time. I think all DR's have our best interests at heart and it's up to us to figure things out - again there is a risk to everything....

I have been told no to the following outside of the norms:

deli meat, hot dogs, sausage, kielbasa, soft cheeses ( blue cheese, brie etc) BBQ salads unless they were jsut brought out. Mainly due to listeria but also the sodium, freshness and end parts....

  • My doc wasn't concerned about listeria, but was about nitrates. I don't eat it to begin with though, I go with cheese and veggies.
  • My OB said heat it up or avoid it.

True, but I can easily give up lunch meat without any major lifestyle alterations.  So I figure why not?  My friend is an OB and saw a woman contract listeria last year and her baby died.  It's just not worth the risk to me for a sandwich.  To each her own though.  I'll probably have a glass of wine or two in the 3rd trimester and some people would think that is horrific.  Oh well.
