Blankie in the Crib?

Is there a certain age where it is OK to put a blankie in? I read somewhere that it was 9 months. Jocelyn is not rolling yet, and we have eliminated the swaddle. At night we use a Halo Sleep Sack. But for naps I have been using a small knit blanket that just covers her. I just went in there and she has it in her hand rubbing it on her face. I noticed she has sort of looked for it as a signal for nap time. I hope I didn't start a bad habit, but I feel like she needs something, and part of me is worried about her getting her face/neck tangled. We also leave her seahorse glow thing in there all the time. We haven't had any issues so far. Should I just take out the blankie and use the sack for naps too?

Re: Blankie in the Crib?

  • DS sleeps with 2 blankets! He loves to hold one and rub it on his face too. I put the other one over his legs if I think he's cold. I used to tuck it in securely around the sides of the bed, which is what is recommended. But since he's rolling so much he untucks it anyway. I do not feel like he's going to suffocate or get hurt in any way because of it.

Maybe buy a small security type blankie and keep the larger blankets out of the crib until your comfortable. Something like this one

  • This is really personal preference.  Of all the mommies I know they all do it differently.  Some of them had blankets in the crib from the beginning and some still don't do it with older children.  It's just up to you.
  • I'm not sure what the "rule" is, but Holly also sleeps in a sleepsack at night, and has nothing else in her crib except her paci and aquarium soother.

During naps though, since I typically put her down in whatever she is wearing (usually with bare arms, legs, and feet), I do put a blanket over her, usually over the lower half of her body. I use a cotton crocheted/knit type blanket though, so even if she puts it over her face, she can breathe through it. She will pull it up towards her face and kind of snuggle it sometimes. She does roll all over the place though. At daycare, they still (lightly) swaddle her.

  • If you are looking for something more for security, Camryn has been carrying a cloth diaper with her and using it for naps/bedtime for many many months.  They are thin, lightweight and a good size for a little one.  We have tons of them so we are able to wash them daily.

  • Totally think it is just your personal preference and what you are comfortable with.  Will still sleeps with nothing in his crib but I am sure he'd be fine if I put something in there with him, I am just paranoid.

Ditto this--we do this sometimes as well. When she's sleepy, she likes to snuggle them under her arm and rub her face with it. It's so cute. :-) She has a "lovie" with a cow head that stays in her car seat. But a cheap ol' burp cloth has always been her "woobie of choice." hehe.

  • Right now I use a really small square gerber blanket from BRU, it is woven too, so it has the holes in it, you can breath through it. She doesn't seem to need it any other time but in the crib for naps. She doesn't look for anything at night. I also sometimes use a quilt a friend made and I fold it over and just wrap her legs. I am torn. I know there is NO WAY I would put one in at night. I might eventually move to one of those breathable blankets. I hate being so paranoid!!

The AAP recommends waiting until they turn 1, so that's what we did.

Ditto.  Natalie now has a breathable blanket in her bed but I think she's so used to not using one that she ignores it most of the time.  She sleeps in her clothes for naps during the summer and seems fine without a blanket covering her.  At night she sleeps in shorts/short sleeve PJs and socks and seems fine.  Last winter though, I always worried she was cold even with eithe the swaddleme (when she was still swaddled) or long sleeve/footed fleece PJs.

  • After Maddie was about 5 months, I let her sleep with a crocheted blanket with big holes during the day. Then around 7 months I let her sleep with that at night, and a regular blanket during the day. Now that it's hot she sleeps with the crocheted one for naps and night, but once it gets cold she'll have a double layer minky blanket for naps and night.

I didn't have a problem with it since her blanket had holes. She LOVES blankets and likes to have one in the car too. She moves all around her crib, but almost always takes her blanket with her and covers herself up before falling asleep. She even went through a phase where she liked to fall asleep with it over her face- but again, since there were holes it didn't bother me.

  • DD sometime naps with a Taggie blanket, but that's small.  I don't know when I would want her to have a real blanket in the crib.

I had DD swaddled in a blanket up until this past week, when she started breaking out of it and scooting down.  In the middle of the night for a feeding, I went into her room and her face was covered.  It was loose over her face, but freaked me out.  She'll probably be over a year before I give her a real blanket again - I will probably give her a Taggie or lovey though - those are lightweight and small.
