Packaged Mushrooms, do you wash before using?

Am I the only one that washes packaged sliced mushrooms before using them?  DH says I'm crazy to clean them each time I cook with them.  I was watching Sandra Lee the other day and I noticed she didn't wash her store bought mushrooms either.  Just wondering.

  • I've always heard that you're not suppsed to wash mushrooms, just brush any dirt off with a paper towel.

  • I sometimes wipe them with a damp paper towel, but a lot of people don't recommend it. I can't remember why. lol

  • I never wash them because I don't like the spongy texture after they've been in water but I do wipe them off with a damp rag.
  • I wash them before I use them.
  • They're dirty.  I wash them.  I'm kind of interested to know why you shouldn't though.

  • I wipe them with a wet paper towel. I can see the dirt on them, I couldn't stand to not clean them off.

  • I wash them, they're grown in sh*t.  The only thing my hometown is known for really is our 'mushroom farm.'  Literally the whole town smells like sh*t, most of the time.  I still love sauteed mushrooms though!

  • You are not supposed to wash them (immerse in water) because they are like tiny sponges soaking up that water. ?You are supposed to pat them with a paper towel.

I personally still wash them. ?They are covered in dirt and poop.?

  • If they are the sliced ones and the package says they are pre-washed I do not. If the package does not say they have been washed, I do, although I have heard that you're just supposed to wipe them off with a damp towel as pp mentioned.
  • I wash them.  All the packaged mushrooms at my grocery store have visible dirt clods on them, and if I get grit in my teeth it really freaks me out.

This is true- although I usually just rinse the dirt off b/c it's easier and I'm too lazy to use a paper towel!

  • I do a combination of quick rinsing and wiping with a damp paper towel.  I know I shouldn't be rinsing them, but. . . . . .EW!
