I live in Jemez Springs and I'm 12 weeks pregnant (my first). I've always thought I'd like to have a homebirth with a midwife, but now that we live an hour away from a hospital I'm questioning this decision. If something did go wrong during the birth, it would be a long drive to Albuquerque or Los Alamos. Has anyone on this board had homebirth experience or live in a rural area? What are your thoughts?
Re: Homebirth in Rural NM
I briefly considered a home birth, but decided against it. For us it is only 20min to the hospital, but I still felt like that might be to far. I think that if my first goes well I would consider it for my second, though I really wish that there was a birthing center around here.
Good luck with your decision.
I think you would need to call a midwife to find out if they are comfortable with that distance from a hospital. I know the midwife I talked to was just fine with a 25-30 min distance because that is how far it is for me. She said that in most cases they identify early on that the mother needs to go to the hospital. It usually has to do with breech position or if the mother changes her mind after laboring for a long time. Typically it is not a rush last minute emergency thing.
I decided against a homebirth because my insurance does not cover it. The midwife I spoke to wanted 4,000.00. If I had to be transported then I would have to pay another 2,000 to 3,000 in my co- insurance . I just can't afford that.
I have a friend who had both of her babies at home and she had very good experiences with both. I think if you really want it and cost isn't a factor you should do it.
