I'm Catholic and my husband is Buddhist and we would like to have our baby baptized/Christened. Is there a place that someone can recommend in the Huntington Beach or Costa Mesa areas where we can have this done.
Because we are raising our baby as both, it would be nice to find a place that would accomodate this without it being geared towards Catholicism...maybe non-denominational???
Let me know your thoughts.
Thank you!
Re: Christening/Baptism in Orange County
I'm by no means an expert, but I think you will definitely have better luck in a nondenominational church if you're looking for a "blended" baptism. I was raised Catholic, but only recently started re-attending church...and if there's one thing I know about Catholicism, it's that the church doesn't tend to sway or bend on how it does things. Part of baptism, if I'm not mistaken (and we haven't baptized Noah yet) is to both welcome the individual into the Church and to become a part of Christ. It's also the first Sacrament that an individual receives. Therefore, I think the church would feel that incorporating other religions would not grasp the meaning, so to speak, of a Catholic baptism. Especially since Buddhism isn't a Christian religion.
I wish I had more suggestions for you, and now that I think about it, I'm also not sure if nondenominational churches are mainly considered Christian and would also heavily stress the relationship with Christ...and if that's something you or your husband are opposed to? While I like the idea of exposing a child to different religions, I don't know if there's an actual organization (for lack of a better word) that practices this...?
We are an inter-religious couple too and I know the previous poster is 100% right about the Catholic church.
I wish I had specific OC suggestions but maybe try Googling where you can have the baby "blessed" instead of baptised/christened since it sounds like you are looking for something not too Christian-centered but rather something that shows respect to both of your faiths. Otherwise you may just want to start calling the non-denomonational churches around and ask if they do it.
