Circumcision - talk to me about the healing process

My LO was just circumcised this morning. When we brought him home, he just *had* to poop his diaper. I was alone while waiting for DH to bring back the pain meds and Vaseline...had to deal with blood-gushing diaper and squalling baby AND him peeing on himself. It was harrowing. We called the pediatrician, who told us to put pressure for 10 mins until the bleeding went down, and to keep him calm. The pressure was no problem - getting LO to stop crying was really, really difficult - even with a paci and feeding. He's sleeping now, and we have an appt tomorrow...phew. 

Moms who had to go through the post-circ healing - what did you do? What was your experience like?

    It was no big deal really. We had a blood gushing issue too right after it was done. And then we got him home and it healed pretty quickly, within a few days I think.

    DD #1 passed away in January 2011 at 14 days old due to congenital heart disease
    DD#2 lost in January 2012 at 23 weeks due to anhydramnios caused by a placental abruption

    Awww poor baby!  I can't imagine his pain.  DS didn't really cry much or have much bleeding.  We just used vaseline on gauze and put lay it over the area in between the diaper.  We did this for about 3 days although the pedi said 24-48 hours only.  I wanted to be extra sure it was ok!  The redness went away on the 2nd day.  GL!

    oh my goodness--we didn't have any blood gushing. you poor ladies! that would have been hard for me to see.  my little guy just was red looking and we kept up the vaseline and gauze for around 2-3 weeks (longer than pedi said we HAD to) and it's healed great.

    side note: our pedi has us push it back every diaper change to prevent adhesions....not everyone knows that and sometimes they need it all re-done! so once he is 10000% healed, ask your doc if you should be doing that. GL!

    We had two circs... and it wasn't a big deal for either baby... just make sure to keep it lubed and covered and it should heal in a few days.. we actually kept it covered a little extra because we weren't sure and when we took them to the LC for a weigh in she told us we were all set.  And no problems since then... the hardest part was taking the first gauze off right after but one of our nurses did it for each boy :)

    I'm sorry you had that experience, I probably would have cried if that happened.  We didn't have any experiences like that...it was just really red for a few days.  He never seemed to be in any discomfort.  Just make sure you keep dry diapers on him and keep putting that vaseline on so it doesn't stick to the diaper.

    Thankfully we didn't have any bleeding issues.  He had his done the morning we left he hospital was just really sleepy for the day.  Since then we've just done the vaseline sandwich with gauze.  It is getting less red (it has been 4 days) and our pedi said to continue the vaseline until the redness is gone.  I figure we'll just do it until we run out of gauze again, so a couple more days.

    Theduck- your siggy pic is beautiful.  DS didn't have any bleeding or anything beyond a little yellow scab ater a week.

    What's this pushing back stuff?  They never told me that- after the procedure or at any of his checkups???

    Our doctor's instructions were: Vaseline on him and the diaper every diaper change and to clean the area with mild soap and water every 2-3 changes.  Figuring out where exactly to put the Vaseline was tricky and I absolutely did not want his diaper sticking to him so I over did it with the first diaper change...I completely covered the front of his diaper with Vaseline which resulted in pee leaking everywhere because I had pretty much made it water proof!  Oops!  Doc said it would take 3-7 days to heal but I continued the Vaseline for about 2 weeks just to be sure.

    We didn't have any bleeding.

    I hope your DS is feeling better soon!  Ouch!

    Thanks ladies - the bleeding's stopped now, and we're instructed to keep the diaper dry until tomorrow's follow-up appointment. We also used Vaseline in our next diaper change. He's seems a lot more calm now. So relieved!
