WWYD? DD has a cold.

DD has had a runny nose since Friday night. She sounds terribly congested. No fever and no weird behavior, just clingy and tired. My dad has her today and he said he laid her down for a nap, but she sounded even worse when she was on her back she then sat herself up and the poor thing fell asleep like that. DH and I have been giving her Tylenol in the am and pm to stop the runny nose. Should I call the pedi or ride it out. I would def call if she was acting funny or had a fever but all she has is the nose running. She has been eating like normal too. My pedi is still out to lunch so I was wondering if its worth a call or not..tia.

Re: WWYD? DD has a cold.

  • Tylenol is for managing pain and reducing fevers, unfortunately it won't do a thing for her runny nose.  Going from the symptoms you're describing, I wouldn't call the ped.  That said, you're the mom, and if you think this warrants a call to the ped, then you should call!  Things you may want to try:  cool mist humidifier, prop up the head of her mattress, saline nose drops and a bulb syringe.  Also, push clear liquids to thin secretions.  I hope she feels better soon!

  • I would ride it out.  Most likely they will end up medicating her unneccessarily.  It's probably just the sniffles.

But like you said if she spikes a fever I would call.

  • Tylenol...on the bottle says it's for the common cold.
  • the pedi probably isn't going to do anything for a cold. For sleeping, keep your dd on a recline either by putting something under her mattress/crib or keeping her in a bouncer or swing.

Use a humidifier. If she gets stuffy go in the bathroom with her, close the door & run the hot water to make the room steamy. Colds, I think, usually last around 5 days. good luck.

  • I would call regardless, since its hung on so long.  Maybe he has some suggestions to help her feel better.

When DD had a cold I got her one of those wall plug in things that's all natural and has menthol, eucalyptus, chamomile and lavender.  It puts it in the air while they sleep and really helped her sleep at night when congested like that.  I got it at CVS and I've even used it for us when we were sick.

Also, I put a folded up blanket under DD's head at night to help with the drainage.
