Just trying to figure out this whole solids thing and come up with a plan. DS is 6 months Thursday, we just started rice cereal a week ago and started oatmeal this weekend. So far we are just doing once/day at dinnertime. He's doing great with it! I'm planning to start veggies in a week, but... then what?
Do solids 1 or 2x/day? Continue oatmeal (and/or rice?) and add veggie, or replace and stop grains? How long to do each veggie/fruit, and after you introduce one, do you mix it up or just stick with one? When to start stage 2 foods? When to do more than 1 meal a day? So confused!! ![]()
What was/is your solids feeding schedule/timeline?
Re: If you started solids at 6 months, please come in!
We started rice cereal at 5 mo, 3 weeks too. For 2 weeks we did just rice cereal, first week just once a day, week 2: 2 times a day.
We then started the stage 1 fruits & veggies- 4 days between introducing a new one, while still incorporating the old ones. Here is where we're at now:
Wake: 7ish: Breakfast: 3 oz oatmeal or rice cereal mixed with little fruit + fruit serving
Lunch: 1-2ish: 1 veg/1 fruit serving
Dinner 5-530: 3 oz rice cereal/oatmeal + veggie + fruit
We still have 3-4 bottles per day as well.
I did dinner until 7 months, lunch and dinner until 9 months, and then breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner.
Honestly, I just fed him based on what we were eating. He started table foods around 7ish months b/c he started refusing purees. I made my food so I just kinda let him lead. If he reached for something I was eating, I would offer it to him if it was cut up small and soft.
Good luck!
I started off feeding DS 1x a day. We did bananas for 4 days and then did avocado. After I introduced avocado I would still give bananas since I knew he didn't have a reaction to them.
After a week or so I started giving him meals 2 times a day and I'm now up to 3.
He eats breakfast at 8:30 and has oatmeal mixed with fruit
Lunch is after his nap - usually around 1:30 and it's either veggies or fruit
Dinner is at 5:30 and is veggies and then fruit for "dessert"
I make my own food so I'm not sure about stage 2. I really just winged it and eventually we fell into a routine.
We did oatmeal for one week, once a day. We never did rice or barley cereals. Then we just went to veggies, once a day... size equivalent to the stage 1 Gerbers (about 2.5oz). We now do 2 solids a day, about 4oz each time. I make most of his stuff so it might not be as watered down as store bought, but the container size is 4oz.
We started slow, and did 7 days for each introduction.
He has a bottle at 7, solids/puffs/melts at 10, bottle at 1, bottle at 4, solids/puffs/melts at 6, bottle at 8
We started right before she was 6 months. We did cereal 1x per day for about 1.5 weeks. Then we added a veggie. After about 3 weeks/a month, we started doing 2 meals a day - veggie and cereal at both.
And just this week we started breakfast - just a fruit.
We're still on stage 1 because I overpurchased them, but stage 2 is really just the same - bigger portions and some combo foods. We still have to get through some single foods though - prunes and peaches I think.
We went cereal, orange veggies, green veggies, fruit. I added cereals in as I found them - I could only find rice and oats for a while and she didn't like rice. So I did wheat early, just to get some variety and then I found barley at BRU.
Who knows if I'm doing it right, I just sort of guess at it!
We worked up to food twice a day. When your DS readily wants the food and opens his mouth for the spoon, I would move up to twice a day.
When I first introduce a fruit/veggie, I give it to DS plain. Then in two days if he does well... I mix it if I want. Then if after another 2 days (so four days since the first introduction) if all is good, I try something new.
I gradually made the cereal thicker and thicker. I make my own baby food so I am not sure about the stage 2 foods. I had to use jar foods once and the stage 2 were a tad runnier than what I make food for him.
When you introduce a new food, make sure to keep feeding him the old food. Such as in the morning give him rice cereal then in the evening oatmeal. Throw in your veggies/ and fruit when you introduce them.
DS's schedule is that he eats oatmeal or rice cereal in the morning with bananas or pears (sometimes both). In the evening we feed him sweet potatoes, carrots, avocado, or squash (2-3 only, we rotate each day) then if he is still hungry, some banana or pear for dessert.
HTH!
We just started last week too. From what I have read you do a new food each week (Stage 1 foods). Order doesn't matter. I heard you are suppose to give new foods in the a.m. to avoid stomach problems and to know if they are going to have an allergic reation.
wholesomebaby.com is really helpful
We started with rice cereal then kind of jumped right in.
Breakfast: Rice cereal with a fruit
Lunch: Veggie...sometimes he eats 2 jars.
Dinner: Meat/veggie/fruit...he usually ate 1 jar of a meat/veggie concoction and 1 jar of fruit.
Now he is eating a lot of table food but I still try to get him to eat a jar of baby food at each feeding.
