2nd Trimester

Talk to me about wipe warmers...

I know they are usually at the top of the "waste of money" lists, but we're having a baby in January in Nebraska and our bedroom is always a little on the chilly side. I'm thinking diaper changes in the middle of the night - baby sleeping in our room - WDYT?

Re: Talk to me about wipe warmers...

  • I didn't do them with my first two.  Another mom gave me the advice - you don't want them getting used to warm wipes and then they get a cold wipe when you're out and about and they flip on you.  It stuck with me.

DD's didn't seem to mind much.  And I have me some fussy babies :)

  • It's not cold here, but I was going to just warm them with my hands. Smile

  • I've heard that they are a waste of money.  I originally put it on my registry list but after all the comments on how it's not really worth it I took it off.
  • You can simply warm the wipe for a moment between your hands.

I really think they are a complete waste.

  • I didn't think ours was a waste of money. When DS was teeny tiny he was always cold, especially in the middle of the night like you said. I think warmers are nice for the newborn period. We stopped using ours around 4 months or so, but I think it's worth it up until then. We'll use it for #2 also!
    .
  • I was planning on getting one, b/c everyone I know who has had one has recommended it.  However, they said it was tough when they were away from hom b/c the wipes wouldn't be warm.  That said, they now have travel wipe warmers too.

  • IMHO-A waste...a good friend got one for her first DD and said that it dried out her wipes too. I figure that when I'm on the go, DD will have to use the wipes I bring, and imagine her surprise when that's cold when she's used to warm?
  • I thought they were overrated, too.  I didn't put one on my registry for my DS and thought they would be a waste of money.  Til I had a week of screaming middle of the night changes.  I made DH go to the 24 hour Fred Meyer near us and buy one and we had quiet night time changes ever since.  Cold wipes are not fun- even when they don't feel that cold to us- to a new baby bottom, they are.  I'd put one on the registry- if someone buys it, great.  If not, try without one and get one if you have a screamer.
  • I am not registering or purchasing one and I'm in northern MN :o)

I've asked around to friends who have had them and it sounds like they are more of a pain in the a$$ than anything. It's one more thing to plug in and if you forget to keep water or whatever in it, it dries out the wipes. One less thing to deal with, if you ask me.

  • I had one for two weeks and returned it because it was drying out my wipes. I would not try a wipe warmer again.

On a side note. I asked DH yesterday morning when I was changing DS if he thought DS minded the cold wipes first thing in the morning. DH's response was it is always a good time to have something cool on your balls.

So I thought about it and there is a lot of body heat in that area. But I do get where you are coming from.

I was thinking about going the wait & see, send DH to the store in case of emergency route. :)

  • I used it with DD for the first 6-8 months at least. It is less shock on them to have a warm wipe on their bums rather than an ice cold one! They also have warmers that get plugged into the car too so if you are traveling... I will definately be using one with this LO also.
  • I know someone who got one as a shower gift and she used it for herself instead of the baby, LOL.  Apparently it was great for those post-pregnancy hemmoroids (sp?)
  • My mom thinks they are the best thing since sliced bread.  If I don't put it on the registry, she'll buy it anyway.
  • I'm getting one.  The advice I was given was that it makes middle of the night diaper changes much more smooth when baby gets a warm wipe instead of a cold one.  I might very well use a cold one during the day but I know I wouldn't want someone touching me in the middle of the night with a cold rag, especially on the booty.

  • I'm not getting one. Keep in mind if you are using it and either touch a poopy diaper and then the wipes or need to go back for more there is a chance you may have gotten bacteria on your hands and then touched the warmer. Bacteria likes warm temps (most like things around body) and this will start harboring and spreading those bacteria. So for us it was hygiene reasons.

  • Before becoming pregnant and just thinking about baby stuff, wipe warmers were on my "absolute necessities" list!  I was going to get one for upstairs and one for downstairs.

After reading the Baby Bargains book and talking to friends who have kids I decided against it.  I have heard that the wipe warmers can dry up the wipes, making them less wet for wiping.  Also friends who tried them say that they are great for at home/in the cold weather... but then the baby is upset when you are out somewhere and you don't have a wipe warmer - so the cold wipe is startling to them.

So I am going to skip the wipe warmers and just use regular wipes that way the baby will be used to the regular temperature of the wipes in home and out!

  • I'm not getting one because I don't want LO to get used to warm wipes and freak out at a cold one.. also because we will have so much stuff and not enough room to put everything. I feel it's something I can do without. If I were to get one, although I didn't register for one, I would certainly try it out and maybe it would be one of those things I didn't think I needed but think it's great.. who knows.

BTW I live in NH and it's always FREEZING in the bedrooms (in the winter) since we never use our heat upstairs.. well this winter will be different and DH knows we will be using heat up there so we don't have a frozen baby by morning.

  • We use warm wipes at home - he does fine. We use cold wipes out and about - he does fine.   It's a nice-ity to have your ass wiped with a warm cloth in the middle of the night, but not a requirement.

ETA: The do dry out the wipes if you don't follow the directions that say to soak the do-hickey that comes in the bottom in water at each wipe re-fill.

  • My theory is that baby is likely going to be awake for most of the middle of the night changes anyhow - and if the room is cold then exposing the legs and genitalia to the air will probably have the same effect as a cold wipe.  So, why waste the money?

I'm also thinking of the fact that I'm hoping to get out of bed as little as possible, so going solely to get a warm wipe is unlikely to happen.

Ditto. I used cold wipes right from the beginning, to avoid them getting used to warm wipes. DD was really high maintenance and it didn't even phase her.
