I have a big piece on my lower back. Too many people have told me I cant get an epidural because of it. Whats the consensus here? I'm pretty sure its total BS.
I heard this all the time a really long time ago...probably just to scare girls from getting tattoos on their lower backs. It's mostly BS. It might be hard for them to get the needle in due to the scarring..but I'm sure they can probably just go above it.
I've never heard of this before. I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask your doctor about it though, just in case... Hopefully, if you want an epi, this is BS.

I have heard it too, but also with it being a new tattoo or under a year old. But I have one lower back tattoo myself and haven't had a problem getting one.
I heard it. I'm not sure if its true I think they try to avoid going through the tat if possible. I think its BS because obviously someone somewhere has had to have major surgery or such and had lots of tattoos. I am planning on going natural or I would have asked about it.
i have a large one in the middle of my spine and another large tramp stamp...they just went in between them for the epi...they didnt say anything to me about it...

It depends on how old the tattoo is, what colors were used, where it's , and located and the doc. I have asked and they had to have two docs look at mine becasue it is outlined in black ... but I just make the cut off ... it's old enough and low enough. however a friend of mine who got a tattoo at the same with me was not as lucky ... it was to high and she was not able to get the shot ... she had her son about 3 months ago
Re: tattoos and epis
I've been told that it depends on the Dr giving the epi...some will do it, some won't...
I was told the same thing. I was also told to ask my MW what she thought and that my hospital is pretty lenient when it comes to this.
It is not a problem unless you have a newer tattoo, then some docs won't do it, but that is a very rare exception.
