On the flip side...if you are getting a NT scan

Since were talking about people's reasons for not getting it, if you did get it or are planning on getting one, please explain why.  I'm trying to figure out if we want to do one or not.

Re: On the flip side...if you are getting a NT scan

  • I'll be 35 when the LO is born, so my OB was pushing amnio. I wanted to do something non-invasive to assess my risk and then decide on amnio if the risk was higher than normal for my age.

  • I'll break down our reasoning

    1. if our risk levels were high for any reason we wanted to be prepared and possibly get more testing

    2. we wanted to make sure the baby was growing on track at 12 weeks

    3.  a chance to see our baby again for 30 minutes?  SURE!!!

  • We're definitely having one.  For me, part of being a good parent is being as prepared as possible.  I would never terminate my pregnancy no matter what but if my baby has a defect I need to properly prepare myself to deal with that.

I found out yesterday that our insurance covers it so that only sealed the deal further.  But we were prepared to pay for it if that wasn't the case.

Also, just for clarification, I think it's a very personal choice and I would never think someone was a bad parent for not choosing to have one.  These are just my personal feelings towards the matter.

  • We had one because we wanted to be informed about any potential 'issues'. It was covered by our insurance and was a good excuse to see the baby again too.

  • DH does want to terminate if there is a problem, so he wants to do all testing as early as possible.  (I know I'll get flamed for this comment.)
  • 1) DH wanted it

    2) I wasn't really pleased with the quality of the in office u/s and had some spotting so I was worried and wanted to take advantage of another good u/s

  • We're definitely having it done ... in 2 weeks to be exact ... even though my egg was 34 years old at the time of conception, I will be having baby at 35. The risk is higher in general for certain birth defects and other problems because of my age (risk significantly escalates with a 35 year old egg) ... we just want to be aware and prepared for any issues as much as we can. Also, it is covered by our insurance so why not

So does my DH.  I wouldn't worry about being flamed, its his opinion and not yours.

  • I'm high risk with Type 1 Diabetes.....
  • I don't understand why you wouldn't want to know. I mean, if there were a problem, wouldn't you want to know so you could prepare mentally/financially etc for the baby?

We value quality of life over life and would terminate if there were issues. Also I love being able to 'visit' with baby for a half hour and ensure all the systems/development are on track.

  • We decided together to get one because we wanted to be ready for any medical conditions that may arise. Also, i have a cousin who had a daughter and she has some very serious medical problems and is not expected to live past 4. We wanted to know as much as possible for our baby and so that we can see the baby, other wise i would have went the whole time up until 20 weeks until we seen the baby. It is covered by our insurance also.
  • I'm lurking around today....

The big difference between just the quad screen (MSAFP) and the Ultrascreen(NT Scan) is accuracy ratings. The NT is much much more accurate and also because it is done earlier in the pregnancy give you more time to debate on doing diagnostic testing if needed. It also checks for PAPP-A which is typically a placenta defect indicator, if the doctor knows PAPP-A is low extra monitoring can be done to make sure things are developing as hoped. The MSAFP is then shortened to the AFP done at 16 to do "Part 2" of the NT Scan. This will check for Downs again and also check for NT defects.

These are ratio testing and are not definitive answers. Downs and NTD are major medical issues even if you don't plan on terminating the pregnancy wouldn't you like to know that you already have a team of neonate specialist that you've talked with and like at birth? I know alot of people have mentioned this and it is true D.S. babies tend to have congenital Heart Problems and that's a HUGE reason regardless of personal views I am a supporter of both screenings and diagnostic testing.

NT scans tests for Downs and Trisomy 18 according to the brochure from my OB.  So there are a lot of medical problems that won't be detected with the NT scan.

  • I want to be as informed at I can possibly be and I want the doctors and nurses at the birth to know everything to help give the baby the best, safest start in life.

And even if it's your opinion you don't deserve to be flamed. I'm with you guys. Insurance covers it, so let's find out all we can. As my OB said, "it's really becoming the new standard of care."

No flames from me, either, whether it's your or DH's opinion.  I think it's an option we would explore, too, depending on the results.  (edited because the nested quotes were messed up.)

    This, and well worded.

  • First, we checked if it was covered by insurance, and it was.

At that point, it became "How much better would I feel having seen that the baby looks good and is measuring where he/she should be before I exit the 1st tri?"  That became my answer.  I wanted it, not for the genetic results, but for the u/s.  And having done it yesterday, I can't imagine not having it done.

Exactly this! My insurance covered it so money wasn't an issue. If there was something wrong with the baby, we would like to be able to prepare ourselves for that. And most importantly, I wanted to be able to see that the baby is measuring right on track. I also had mine yesterday and it was an amazing experience seeing the baby bouncing all around.

  • 1) Because my insurance covers it.

    2) Because I have recently heard 2 stores from friends of friends where there were serious anatomical problems with baby and they were identified at NT scan (not compatible with life). Otherwise they would never have known until the big US at 20 weeks.

    3) Because I needed to "see" my baby because I was having trouble connecting to it, imagining it as anything other than an alien-looking blob of cells.

  • It was an easy, non-invasive way to check up on the little one. To make sure everything was on track.

Plus, if something was wrong, it would be a chance to prepare ourselves.

Not to mention that the NT scan was where we found out the first time around that we had a missed miscarriage, so this time around it was our reassurance that everything was okay... and to be frank, that our baby was alive.

  • When we were first presented with the option by my doctor, we thought 2 things:

1)Hey, why not?! We'd love to see our baby as much as possible.

2)I guess it would be good to know if something was wrong (never did we anticipate that anything would actually be wrong, it was all very hypothetical to us at the time)

We had our scan last week...and something may be wrong after all.  Our risk is 1:30 for downs.  We were shocked.  I go in on Thursday for a CVS and genetic counseling.

Though we've been filled with worry, we're so glad we did the NT Scan and that now we're doing the CVS.  We want to be able to prepare in the event that we're having a special needs baby.  And should the test reveal something far worse than downs (we would not terminate for DS), a diagnosis in which the baby's condition is not compatible with life, we'd rather know that now and have the possibility of terminating sooner rather than later.

It is all a very personal decision, and while most NT Scans come out fine, we've been one of the few that has to move on to further testing.  I am happy to know my baby's health status ASAP and make appropriate arrangements (medical and otherwise) and adjustments (to my thinking, to my life).

  • My RE recommended it.  I don't have any strong feelings either way, and I'm not really at high risk for any issues, so I told him to go ahead and do it.

Thanks ladies!!  We're very worried and anxious but doing our best to stay positive and optimistic.

I'll post once we get our FISH results (hopefully Friday).  On the plus side, we get to find out extra early if we're having a boy or girl, yay!

  • I got it. It's covered 100% by insurance. I have a friend that didn't only to find out serious issues at the 19w u/s and had to terminate. I want to know my risks, that is just the type of person I am. GL with your decision.
  • I wanted to get one, but because I have no genetic abnormalities in my family my midwife won't do one.

I specifically wanted one to find out if there would be a reason to terminate. My husband and I didn't want to bring a child into this world that can't life their life to the fullest or independently. The quality of a life is much more important than the life itself in my eyes.
