Re-circumcised?

Apparently the doctor that performed my son's circumcision at birth did not take enough of the foreskin.  Our pediatrician suggested we see a pediatric surgeon about this.  We've taken our son to see him, and he informed us that it's entirely our decision as to whether or not we have our son re-circumcised.  There are no medical issues that will be created if we don't.  I'm nervous about having this done for my son, but at the same time I don't want him to be self conscious about it as he gets older.  Has anyone had to do this?  At what age did you do it?  What was the recovery like for your son?

Re: Re-circumcised?

  • My friends DS had to have this done.  He had it done right after he was a year old.  She said he recovered fine.  Of course he was groggy just like any other surgery.

My DS had to have surgery on his penis at 3 for something else.  His whole was not big enough and he was straining to go pee.  And the next day he was peeing like a champ! lol  So he also recovered well from penis surgery.

  • My son has kind of the same thing going on.  Our pedi said he just has a little extra skin and every circ is different and said he wouldn't do anything about it.  He said it is very painful at this age to get recircumcised and there is no reason to put him through it.  He said there is no "normal" when it comes to circumcisions and there is no reason he should feel self conscious about it later in life.  We're not doing anything for it because I really wouldn't want to put him through the pain at this point, and like the pedi said no 2 are the same anyway.  I don't know just looking at that sad face from just getting a shot breaks my heart, I couldn't put him through it.

  • we had DS re done at 6.5mos. I noticed around 3 mos that he still had alot of skin down there to the point where it looked like he wasn;t even done. we talked to our pediatrician and he referred us to a pediatric urologist, who is the one who actually does the surgery. They told us that it wasn;t that bad and that he would go into it but he does still have extra skin down there. We decided to get it done and we felt the sooner the better because they still sleep alot and he is not really that mobile yet. 6 mos is the youngest they put them under for that type of procedure. DS was really great after recovery and ironically the day after his surgery he rolled from back to his belly. he acted like he never even had anything done down there. we did have to do the bactitracine routine again for about 2 wks and the stitched fell out on their own. but he looks really great now, almost perfect with a nice even amount of skin all around.

  • I am no help...but our son has extra skin. 3 doctors have told me that he just has a "fat pad" and it might go away. I just worry about when he is older too. but at the same time...not sure if I should "fix" it/
