Kind of TMI: White poop??

I just changed DD's diaper and her poop is completely white. Any one know what would cause that? An allergic reaction, maybe? DH gave her breakfast this morning, but as far as I know she hasn't had anything new... and she pooped fine this morning. Any ideas??

  • I would call the on-call doctor. Usually indicates liver issues (not always though but it won't hurt to call).

  • I have no idea, but I'm pretty sure I'd be calling the doctor in the AM.  I wish I could help!

  • I believe it means liver problems.  I'd call the after hours pedi. number.
  • My friends baby did this when he just had the flu....?
  • My pedi said to call if the poop was black, white or red.
  • PP's are right.  White poo is a huge red flag for liver problems.  DS has been having white chunks in his poo for about a month now.  We got a positive C-diff dx, but his liver function tests all came back ok.  They still don't know what is causing the white and we follow up with his GI again at the end of the month.  Please try not to panic now- but I would definitely call the pedi.
  • Trying to look for something totally benign - is it possible she ate paper?  This happened to a friend of mine's LO.

Not that I know of, but DH was watching her so I could sleep this morning, so I suppose it could have happened. I'm googling it, too, and on another forum someone said white foods can = white poop and she did eat mozzarella today. But it's not the first time she's had it and we've never had white poop before.

I'm waiting for the on-call dr. to call me back and kind of freaking out now.

  • Don't freak out. Chances are it's nothing, or something silly like the paper. It's good that you called, but stressing out isn't going to help your LO or you. ((hugs))
  • I thought it had something to do with starting yogurt.  I read somewhere that it could be undigested milk product. At their age, they can only digest so much dairy.  However, it has continued even when he has gone several days without yogurt.  Try not to panic yet.  One time could be anything.  If it happens again, then worry.  We had to do stool samples and never did I want DS to poo so badly.  Our GI also put DS on pedialyte only for 24 hours to give his system a "gut rest." Please keep me posted.  Please don't take this the wrong way- but I'd be interested to see what you hear.  The main issue that usually causes white poo (liver issues) was completely normal.
  • We just went through this this weekend! Turns out our son (along with the rest of us) had Norwalk. "White poo" isn't a symptom of Norwalk on any site I could find, but as soon as he got better the white poo went away.

  • Okay, I talked to the on-call doctor. She said that based on the description, she doesn't think it's anything to worry about. She said, if anything, it could be a food sensitivity, but it is more likely because DD is still BF'd. She said it's not uncommon for BF'd babies to have an occasional weird stool, whether it be color, texture, going days without pooping, etc. So we're just keeping an eye out for any other symptoms.

    Thanks, ladies!

  • I'm so glad she didn't think it was anything to worry about. Keep us posted if it happens again!  Sleep easy mama!
