Back pain - what does this sound like?

I have a stabbing pain in my left shoulder blade when I breathe and also when I turn a certain way. This is the second day of it. Does this sound like a pulled muscle? I wouldn't worry at all if it wasn't for the difficulty taking deep breathes.  I know I should just go see a Dr. but we're leaving tomorrow for a short trip that can't be changed. Plus, I'm stubborn. Has anyone had anything like this?

Re: Back pain - what does this sound like?

  • As the recent lucky recipient of a herniated disc, I understand and I feel your pain. I would suggest Aleve in the short term but definitely see the doctor when you get back.

In June, I thought I had pulled a muscle in my right "cheek" that turned out to be a herniated disc pushing on a nerve.  That nerve pain is worse than anything. I talked to a woman this past weekend who had disc problems in her upper back so I guess it's possible that something is pushing on a nerve up there.  I genuinely hope it's a pulled muscle, considering the alternative.

Keep us posted and I hope you feel better.

  • Gosh Tosha, that sounds painful!

The first thing I thought of was that you slept on it wrong.... could that possibly be it?

    Either way, feel better!

  • another POSSIBILITY (not saying that is what it is) is pleurisy
  • Definitely sounds like a nerve pain of some sort. Hopefully you just slept funny or something and have a pinched nerve. Maybe try some Ibuprofen / Tylenol until you get back, and if it's not better see a doc?

Re; pleurosy. I've had it twice and my pain was in my rib-area (not saying it can't be in your shoulder area, just saying mine wasn't). I would say that's not likely unless maybe you've had a recent respiratory infection, cold, etc. I hope not anyway. It sucks.
  • No advice but just sending you LOTS of get well vibes!!
  • ask your hubby to give you a massage.  Put some ice on it.  And try some anti-inflammatory.  I would check with a doc if it's not better when you get back....but it sounds like some muscle tension.
