Any Social Workers or Experience with Parents who need State assistance?

Hi,

I will try to condense this story as much as possible.  I met a woman recently who loss her house because the landlord has to sell it because he loss his job and is moving out-of-state.  Her dh is in a rehabilitation/nursing home because he keeps having strokes and is paralyzed from them (he was in the hospital when they lost their house).  Well I just found out today she along with 5 of her 6 daughters (2 of them are in hs, 2 are in jr. high & the youngest is in elementary school) have been living in a shelter.  The oldest daughter who is 20 is in the hospital right now from having a baby (this is her 3rd, the other 2 are with this woman at the shelter also), once she's discharged she will be going to the shelter with the baby.  My understanding is she does not have all 7 children with her at the shelter at once, I guess somehow they rotate it (I'm assuming with either family or friends) so she has 3 kids with her at a time.

I know she is limited to her time she can go to the library to get on a computer because she is running around between her dh & the children.  They do receive state assistance (he gets ss, for her I'm not sure what the state aid is now called, but I know she is section 8) but I'm hoping there is some agency I can reach out to that can help.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I will keep popping over here to see if there are any responses but if you need me I can be paged on the TTCAL board. Thanks so much.

  • She should look into whatever county she lives in and contact the State of Michigan's Department of Human Services / Family Independence Agency for that county.  I would go with whatever county her house was in or where her husband is. Here is a link: https://www.michigan.gov/dhs

  • Thank you.  I was able to get a hold of someone and they gave me a number, it's 211 and it's a resource line that it looks like they will be able to help her with a security deposit to get into a home and out of the shelter.
  • That is good to hear! I am glad.

  • ditto 2-1-1, they have a large database of all of the agencies in the area that can offer her assistance
