xp: Am I being unrealistic

This message is especially for those who have 3 children in infant seats or car seats.

I am wondering about our car situation.  My husband drives a 2005 Chevy Malibu and I drive a 2005 Toyota Camry.  Am I being unrealistic to try to fit three seats in the backseat?  My daughter will turn three in November and the twins will be born in January.  I am feeling so overwhelmed.  We found out we are having twins (don't get me wrong, I am starting to get excited about it) but we quickly outgrew our house (a three bedroom bi-level with no storage) and our cars.  One car is paid off and the other will be before the twins arive.  We are going to make our house work until at least next summer.  I too will now have 3 in daycare.  I am just getting so stressed.  I am hoping that there is a way to fit all three in the vehicles that we have at least until the twins turn 1.  Help PLEASE!

TIA,

Kim

  • Im pretty sure that all 3 seats will not fit. I would guess you'd have to measure and actually try to install them to figure it out.

  • We had a Chrysler Sebring, which has a pretty decent-sized back seat, but there was no way we could fit three carseats in there.  Maybe if we switched DD to a booster, but I'm a big believer in 5 point harness as long as possible.  I got a minivan, which I love having now.  You may want to look around and see if you can find something larger.

  • I have the Britax Marathon, which is pretty big, but it does fit in my 2002 Honda Civic.  However, 2 of them would not fit in my Honda Civic, so my guess is no, 3 won't fit.
  • I'm pretty sure they would fit in the Malibu, but I'm not sure they will fit in the Camary.  You will have to try it out and see how it goes.  Keep us updated.  I will be interested to know how it works out.

  • You might have to get smaller carseats I know the combi concorro is supposed to be very small and you might be able to fit 3 of them in the back seat.  If you google it 3 of them are supposed to fit in a compact car.  they might be your best bet.

  • yikes... I have no advice for you, but good luck!! ... it does sound like you're mommy-mobile bound, though...

  • I am not opposed to the minivan idea.  I just wanted to have a better understanding of the financial situation before I jumped into that.  We were ready for another one but shocked when we found out it was going to be 2 more!  Many more additional expenses! Daycare being the main one!  Jumping from one to three is CRAZY!

  • Dh's brother and wife are going to be in the same situation and I'm not sure how they are going to work it out.  They have two daughters - one is 5 and the other is 6 1/2.  They have a nissian altima and I think a bronco/suv type...no idea how they are going to make 3 seats work in the back of either car.

  • I think with three young kids a 3 seater is really needed.

  • My issue would be what would you do if you felt that you needed to sit in the back with the twins while DH drove, or the opposite.  I felt the need to sit with DD a lot, and I think I will with this one too.

We have a minivan and really love it.  Got it right after DD was born.  Now DD can sit in the front with her booster seat or the far back if I need to sit by the baby.

  • Would it be easier to bite the bullet and buy a new car - probably - but if you are going to have the added expenses of twins in daycare (god bless you : ) and are almost finished with car payments I would hate to see you have to shll out even more money if you didn't absolutely have to, ya know?

The 'footprint' of car seats vary greatly from seat to seat and brand to brand.

You don't have a prayer of squishing a Marathon and two Keyfits into the backseat of a sedan - but it is completely possible to find a combination of seats that could work.

How old/big is your older child? Like a PP mentioned the new combi seat brags the ability to fit 3 across - and while I think they look fantastically cushy, and they are appropriate from birth, they have relitively low limits. (I'm thinking 40 and 40.) They would certainly buy you a few years without having to buy a new car.

I know the Combi Connection (an infant seat) is supposed to have a small footprint (we had one of these with J that I adored) and I believe the smaller version of the baby trend flex loc is supposed to have a small footprint also.

If you have a BRU nearby, they will let you 'try out' car seats in your car if you leave your ID at the customer service desk. Try some combinations and see what you can fit.

Also, there is a great car seat forum under the baby bargain boards at www.windsorpeak.com. There are a few car seat techs (Julie is a car seat tech goddess) and a few car seat junkies over there. If anyone could offer any real life BTDT advice it would be them!

    Good Luck!

    (and congrats on the twins!)
