Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

What time does your LO wake up?

My 15 month old goes to bed between 7:30 and 8pm every night and wakes up at 5:30am every morning.  It is driving DH and I crazy!  What time does your LO wake up and does anyone know the secret to getting them to sleep later in the morning?  Everything I read online and in the books says not to push bedtime back later, but what has worked for all of you?  She only naps for about 1 1/2 hours per day.  Thanks for your suggestions!

Re: What time does your LO wake up?

  • Honestly, I haven't seen much correlation b/w later bedtime = later wake time.  What I can suggest is getting great naps in during the day.  There IS a correlation between good naps = good sleep.

  • My DD is almost 15 months old.  We put her to bed between 7:45 and 8pm.  She usually wakes between 7am and 8am.  Most days closer to 7am.

I don't really have any suggestions about getting your DD to sleep later.  Black out shades?  GL!

  • DS goes to bed around 7:30 and is up between 6-7....these days closer to 7:00 (let's hope it stays that way).  He used to get up around 530-600.  There will still be some occasional early times but we can deal with them here and there.  Do you know what actually got him sleeping later?  (Now I hope I don't jinx it).  It was going on vacation....once we did he's been sleeping later....it could just be coincidence but before that it was 530-6:00.  First day of vacation he slept til 7:15 and days after around 7 or later.  Good luck.  Good naps help!  Don't wait til DD is overtired.
  • DS goes to bed around 7/730pm and he gets up around 630am sometimes he sleeps until closer to 7am on the weekends.

  • My DD goes to bed at 8 like clockwork and is up at 7:30 like clockwork. If we push her bedtime back, she STILL wakes up at 7:30. She also only naps about an hour and a half.

  • I feel your pain.  My son just pushed his wake up time back to 5-5:30...it used to be more like 4:45-5 and we've tried everything!!!!  Bottles, naps, later bedtime, earlier bedtime, you name it...we've tried it.  I think he sleeping in a little later these days because he plays so hard and is exhausted by bed time (8pm).  A couple days lately he's actually slept in until 6 which was heaven!  I'm hoping he outgrows this early bird stuff!

  • I know this sounds counter-intuitive, but put her to bed EARLIER! Trust me, it works. I had this problem a couple of months ago and I tried EVERYTHING. The only thing that worked was moving his bedtime up to 7pm. And I mean that I literally close his door by 7. Now he sleeps till 6/6:30. Still early, but at least it's better than 5/5:30.?

    Remember: sleep begets sleep.

And if you try this, stick with it for a week before you decide it doesn't work. It does take some time to adjust. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the results. If it's easier for you, try moving bedtime up 15 minutes at a time.

    Good luck!?

  • Right around that same age (15 months), my DD did the same thing... woke up between 5/5:30 every morning. Then, about a week or 2 ago, she started sleeping later (between 6:30/7:30). We didn't change anything about her bedtime or her naps. I don't know if it was a growing thing, but she seemed to grow out of it and is now sleeping much better (knock on wood). But, I also know some ladies have had luck with pushing the bedtime back, so you may want to give that a try. GL!
