Did I ruin my happy baby?

So we started Ferber on Thursday night...and it went great.  Each day since then has gone worse and worse...not so much at night, but naps have been a real problem.  Before he would wake up after 30-45 min and we went back into soothe him and he slept for another 30min to a hour plus.  Now he wakes up after 30 min and screams!  I go in at the 5/10/15 min mark and sometimes it takes up to the 20 min for him to settle back down.  Normally when he wakes up in the mornings he is super happy and smiley, now I can barely get a grin out of him.  I know they say CIO is not going to hurt him, but it is hard to know that when I feel like I have stolen his smiles away :(

Re: Did I ruin my happy baby?

  • Sorry, what is Ferber?
  • Loading the player...
  • Ferber is a Doctor who write "Solve your child's sleep problems"...it is a method of sleep training
  • We did CIO from HSHHC but decided to soothe for naps until his night sleep is better organized.  This also helps me w/ the guilt of letting him cry.  HTH
  • may be he is not ready yet ?

From WebMd (this was for week 5 though) :Don't try to sleep train your baby yet. It's too early to let your baby "cry it out." Since it takes 3-6 months for a baby's brain to mature enough to establish a regular pattern and to sleep through the night, wait until then to try sleep training.

From babycenter.com:In a nutshell, Ferber says you can teach your baby to soothe himself to sleep when he's physically and emotionally ready, usually sometime between 4 and 6 months of age.

  • When we started sleep training DS, we pretty much used CIO when we put him down for a nap, going in to check on him every 15 minutes, and most of the time he would fall asleep within 20 minutes.

But if DS wakes up after having been asleep, I usually don't do much CIO or Ferber or anything to try to get him back to sleep. I'll go in and put his paci in and turn on his rainforest noisemaker and pat him on the chest, and then leave, but if he's still crying five or ten minutes later, I'll go ahead and get him up and feed him, even if it's only been 30 or 45 minutes.

I don't have any particular pediatrician-recommended reason for doing it that way or anything, but you might give it a shot and see if it works for you and makes LO happier.
