Dr. Brown's versus Avent

I know that I am not quite ready to be on this message board yet but I thought that the mom's on this board could give me some recommendations.

After much research, we have decided to go with either the Avent bottles or Dr. Brown's bottles.

I wanted to know how many other mom's have used either of these bottles.  Dr. Brown's bottles seem to have multiple parts to clean compared to the Avent bottles.  Does the vent system in the Dr. Brown's bottles make them that much better over Avent bottles?

Also, I will be a first-time mom.  How many bottles will I need for a newborn?  What sizes should I get?  Thanks in advance!!

Re: Dr. Brown's versus Avent

  • FWIW I didn't like the avents... They had a lot of bubbles in them w/ the formula... I've heard the Dr Brown's are great though! We use the Playtex Ventaire's and like them alot as well.

I would get a few smaller bottles like maybe 3-4-6oz size and a decent amount of larger ones since they'll last longer for you. :)  We use mostly the large ones now unless we premix formula.  Which I also HIGHLY recommend!!! THe Dr Brown's pitcher is AWESOME!

  • I just had my baby 3 weeks ago.  I've had trouble breastfeeding so I'm pumping my milk and giving the baby breast milk in a bottle.  We started off using a Avent bottle, but the bottle would leak.  You really have to tighten the collar onto the bottle.  And since it was on so tight, it was hard to unscrew...especially if you're holding the baby.  The baby was also spitting up a lot and seemed to be full of gas.  We were constantly burping him during his feedings so finally today I went to the store and bought the wide mouth Dr. Brown bottles.  I've only used it for 2 feedings and so far I like it. You don't see any bubbles inside the bottle when the baby is drinking like the Avent and the Dr. Brown venting systems seems to work.  There are 2 additional parts that you need to clean...the reservoir and the insert, but it comes with a tiny brush.  I don't think it's that much trouble since you're going to be washing the bottles and nipples anyways.
  • FWIW: We use the Dr. Browns and have from the beginning, so I can't compare them to Avent but just wanted to say it doesn't take that long to clean the 2 additional pieces for the bottles (and you can put them in the dishwasher if you get a dishwasher basket). Once the reservoir and insert are dry, I snap them together and keep them on the drying rack ready to go.  It takes 2 seconds and they are ready when I need them (helpful in the middle of the night).  The extra pieces seem to be a common complaint about these bottles but I've never had it be an issue.

  • I have Avent bottles and just replaced them all with Born Free.  I did all the tricks to make the bottles stop leaking and they still leaked 70% of the time.  I think they did a good job with gas control and I gave them a good shot but I got so pissed when everytime I would see if they were going to leak I would end up losing 1/2 ounce or more of precious breastmilk.  I think the Born Free work just as good.  They have less pieces than Dr. Browns.
  • We use Avent bottles and I love them and have never had a leaking problem that I read about so often. I have a gift set of Dr. Browns that I just picked up (fantastic deal on sale), but haven't opened them yet so I don't know how they compare but I've read a lot of good things about them as well. I also use Born Free and Born to Grow and those work well too.

You may want to get a couple of each brand to see which one will work best with your LO. I mostly breastfeed but we rotate between 3 different types of bottles (soon to be 4 when I start using the Dr. Browns) when I give her pumped milk and she does fine with all - but some babies are more picky or respond better to different bottles.

  • We used Avent with our first child...but decided against them with the second because I don't think they are BPA free.  We used Born Free with the second and recently switched to Playtex Drop-Ins because they are BPA free and very convenient (although not all that environmentally friendly).
