Went to an autism GTG at the zoo...what an eye-opener!

We are visiting NE from our homestate of NJ, and there was this wonderful event for autistic children and their families at the Omaha zoo.

WOW. It was actually GOOD to see other children exhibiting similar behaviors as Gabe (as strange as that sounds) because I know his diagnoses of PDD NOS is right on the money.

I am just happy to know THERE ARE SO MANY people like us...who have little ones and are in our position.

I felt *at home* with everyone. It was nice. I think I will seek out a support group now!

You will forever be my best friend. I can almost feel our hugs. I will ensure everyone will know (now and in the future) what a genuine, kind, loving person you were...I already miss your laughter and our daily conversations. I love you, Samantha. May 20, 1983- February 20, 2012

  • If you find one would you let me know?  I feel the same way.  I've been finding myself NOT wanting to hang out with parents of kids who are way advanced, etc.

Do other parents of *normal* kids make you feel like crap??? Sometimes it is just nice to GTG with parents who are dealing with similar issues.

  • Once every couple months, our autism society holds an event for all children with disabilities at the Local Kids Museum. WHAT FUN!! And, we've been to an event just with the autism society for the monkey joes. Seems like we've got a few things going on & it's always free!

We have a blast when we can go. Even though it seems like Autism would be on the brain the whole time... it's like it is LESS so b/c you don't even have to think about it... just GO and have fun and forget about bahavior.

  • Thats so great Andrea! I know you were talking about how you were looking forward to this for you and Gabe.. I am so happy for you that you had a good time! It IS nice to be around other kids and moms who are going thru the same things!
  • Thanks everyone!

Jessica, that is nice to see you are not alone!

Auntie-Definitely NOT being *Debbie Downer* at all...I always appreciate your insight / advice.

Gabe goes to a school for kids on the spectrum...but when we GTG with friends they are usually *typically developing* peers...but for no particular reason, these are just my friends I met through his Gymboree class!!!

I am open to any kind of playdate.
