Antidepressants and breastfeeding

I posted this on Breastfeeding but thought I would post it here as well...

At my doctor appointment Friday my dr. prescribed me Wellbutrin SR for depression and anxiety. I told her I was exclusively breastfeeding and wanted to know if that was ok to take while doing so. She assured me that there have been many studies out there and it was perfectly safe to take while pregnant and BF.

Looking at the paperwork that came with the medicine it says this drug passes into breastmilk. Discontinue breastfeeding if taking this medication.  So? Who do I listen to here? I have looked on Kellymom about it, just curious if anyone else has taken this or still is while BF?

Thanks so muchSmile

Re: Antidepressants and breastfeeding

  • My OB gave me Zoloft, because she said that was the only one considered "safe" while BFing. I would have preferred the Wellbutrin since I had good results in the past while on it. I had to stop taking the Zoloft because it made me feel terrible. I would look into the Wellbutrin before taking only because of what I was told.....

  • Wellbutrin is one drug my doctor told me could effect your milk supply....and that Zoloft would be better.
  • trust your dr. i am on zoloft, and have been on it for a few years. i stopped taking it during the 1st trimester and then started up again once in second and am continuing now. i EBF. my psych and ob knows this and have said its ok to continue my meds. i am only on 50 mg. the good for me outweighs the poss bad.
  • Personally, I wouldn't take it because of the warning label.  But, every situation is different and you have to do what is best for you.  Would you be OK not taking it?
  • My doctor told me Wellbutrin is her preferred choice for breastfeeding moms. ?I've been on it before and love it. ?She prescribed it to me but my insurance company wants to charge me $500 for a 90 day supply, so that won't be an option for me.

I'd feel very comfortable taking it while BFing.?

  • I take a small dose of prozac for depression/anxiety. It works really well. My dr. prefers this drug during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It's the oldest of those types of drugs.
  • I do need the medication. I trust what my dr. says its just hard to feel 100% ok with taking it after reading something like that. I will be calling my dr. tomorrow morning just to be sure. I really didn't want to be on anything, and I really hope that I only need to be for a month or two. Thank you for the replies.
