In case you didn't see earlier, my niece and nephew are both celebrating birthdays this coming week (three year old niece and one year old nephew). I was stuck on what to make my nephew, but you all totally pulled through for me.
I ended up making him a blanket with Iced Giraffes on bamboo interlock, backed with coordinating ice-blue OBV. Then, to round out the gift, I made him some fabric blocks out of the same fabrics, with the addition of a coordinating brown fabric.
I hope I'm not turning into that freakish aunt that always brings dorky homemade junk to birthdays.
Eep!
In case you missed my earlier AWing, here's what I made for my niece (who loves frogs). It's an insulated PUL-lined lunch bag/wristlet. The print is Frog Chow by Michael Miller. Also included are five (so mom only has to wash once a week) matching minkee-backed napkins.
Re: PIPs inside -- I've been sewing all day (or so it seems)!

Don't worry - you can be my aunt anytime! Those look fantastic!

What did you use to make the blocks keep a shape? I tried them once and ended up w/ balls that looked like they should be blocks
Love them btw!

I've made them before with cotton. I ironed on a medium weight stabilizer to each square along the seam line (so that I wouldn't have to sew through 4 layers). I think next time I might try it without. I think the key is not to overstuff. I could still get plenty of stuffing in there, but they are a nice shape and nice and squishy for little hands! HTH!!
All I had at home was lightweight iron-on stabilizer, so I just used that on the fabric before cutting it into squares. Next time I'd like to try medium or even heavy weight. These are nice and squishy, but they do have the inherent desire to want to pouf. Although, Daisy has a good point. Perhaps a little squishy/poufy is better for the wee ones. Form following function, and all.
Thanks for making me feel better about making the gifts, ladies. They really do have a lot of heart sewn into them. I hope the kids (and, honestly, the parents) like them.
Me too, especially now that I've worked with it. And I have to say, the colored OBV is so gorgeous. The pictures just don't do the color justice. It's cool, yet deep at the same time.
I suppose it helps that blue is my favorite color, too. lol
My birthday is December 2nd. Anything you feel inspired to make would be very welcome! TIA!!
