Breastfeeding

does it matter...?

does it matter what bottles you use if you pump and store?  I'm planning on bfeeding for a while, but when I go back to work and when she's home with her dad and perhaps with grandparents, I want to have milk stored up for them to have available.  I guess I'm just confused on what I really need.  Should I just store in those bags and then...this is where I get confused on warming it up and whatnot.  I would have taken a class but our schedules are so screwy it's really hard to find a time to be able to go without missing a whole days worth of work, so I'm sure this is something they would have covered in the class, thank you in advance for any advice!

  • here's what I do

I pump into the bottles that go with my pump (medela)- i have about 18 total - i bought a lot right before i went back to work. Then i pour one of the bottles together with the other ( i don't usually pump more than 5 oz a session) and store in the cooler while i am working . At home, we store the medela bottles in the fridge with a piece of masking tape for the date that they were pumped. We make bottles for daycare a couple of days at a time. At the end of the week, whatever milk is leftover from the week in the bottles, I freeze in  lansinoh brand bags.

  • I found bags to be better for freezing pumped milk.  They are better for space considerations, and bags are much cheaper than bottles.

For warming--if it has been in the freezer, let it defrost in the refrigerator.  If it has been thawed, putting the bag in a cup of hot tap water works pretty well.

As far as bottles go, whatever kind your baby will eat from will be the best kind.

  • and we use playtex drop ins for him at daycare, he did not like the medela bottles/nipples.

  • Okay so another question...I dont know what pump I'm getting yet, but can't really afford the 300 dollar medela that I want..but I was wondering do you pump ONLY into the bottles?  Or can you pump into bags?  I'm so overwhelmed by this, but the answers so far have been EXTREMELY comforting! thanks ladies!

  • I have a Lansinoh Double Electric.  I pump about every 3-4 hours straight into the bottles that came with the pump.  I then either put the milk into the Playtex drop-ins or freeze it in the Gerber bags.  I usually keep about 5 bottles of 4oz. each in the fridge - anything beyond that gets frozen.  Depending on the time of day, I can pump anywhere from 4oz. to 8oz.

    Hope this helps.  Good luck!

  • I know that Medela makes bags that attach to the pump. I have never used them nor do i know if they work with other pumps.

I have a Lansinoh Double Electric.

is this about 160?  I think I have it on my registry, I've just been told it's not worth it so much to rent one from the hospital (safety and sanitary reasons), so I thought this was a pretty good price range for the actual use I'd get out of it.

I have the Lansinoh and I got it brand new on ebay for $100.  It works perfectly for me and I have no complaints.  It also is a closed system unlike the Medela so no milk can back up into the tubing which I hear is really annoying and time consuming to clean.

You cannot pump straight into the bags.

You cannot freeze breast milk in the drop ins bags.   Playtex does have a storage system but I dont use it.  I find it easy to just pour the mil into the Gerber storage bags.  You can then defrost the bags and put them right into the playtex drop-in bottle - they are shaped the exact same way.  I have done it several times already and it works perfectly!

  • DS always took Avent bottles which worked fine for us.

I stored my milk in the Lanisoh bags which worked great. I put them flat in the freezer so they took up way less room.

For warming the milk, whoever was watching DS would heat some water in the microwave and then set the bag in the heated water. Eventually it thawed out and warmed up. They did this about 10-15 minutes before it was time to eat.

There are bags you can pump into! My coworker had them (we pumped over the same time and one day I forgot bottles to pump into). I think they were made by Medela.

That's not true, you can pump in a bag if you want, then keep in fridge then freeze.

With the Lansinoh pump (which works great for me also! I hate the pump rental even though it was a Medela...) you can use the Lansinoh bags and use a rubber band on each 'horn' to hold the bag. Or you can buy the Medeal bags too and those come with a little tab that allows the bag to hand on to the horn. Same principle.

Personally, I love the Lansinoh bags, just like the pp, lay them flt to freeze, then store them up, just be careful to not bang the corners too bad, that will prevent damage and potential leaks.

As far as bottles go, I use Avent, but that was a choice out of the blue (or rather my sister had used them so I just imitated her since she was happy with them) and my LO takes them well, so it all worked out :)

    GL!!

I used these and then I used the Avent bottles once the milk was warmed and heated up! He took very well to it and the bags are great for space in the freezer or can stand up on their own in the fridge! I loved them!
