Unsafe MAM Pacifiers

I don't really agree 100% with giving a child a pacifier from birth, but while in the hospital my milk hadn't come in yet and my husband and I were awaiting a nurse to bring our hungry baby some formula, she was taking forever and nothing seemed to be calming Leigha down. So I gave in and gave Leigha a pacifier we had received as a gift and she began sucking away at it. The Pacifier was a neatly designed MAM brand paci for newborns. I read the facts that came included and noticed it was "specially designed" to help promote airflow while baby sucked on it. Seemed like a safe one to me. However, not long after we had first given it to her we started to notice chapped like skin around her little mouth. Naturally I wasn't too worried because babies have very sensitive skin to begin with, though the next day (still in the hospital) it seemed worse. I couldn't quite figure out what was causing it, then a nurse came in and inspected it as well. She asked to look at the pacifier we had been giving her and closely examined the inside of the paci that touches Leigha's cheeks as she sucks on it. That's when she noticed tiny little bumps all around the inside of the plastic gaurd and said it was infact the pacifier that was litterally rubbing my babys face raw! The tiny bumps are so small it was comperable to if I would have rubbed her face with coarse sand paper. I felt like a horrible mother! We imediately discontinued the use of the pacifier and threw out all the MAM brand ones we had. Since, I have tried to inspect the MAM brands at the store while they are in thier case to see if you can notice the bumps on all of them. However, it is a little diffucult to notice them when they are in thier plastic protection, and not all of them seemed to have these strange bumps. It took Leigha's face almost 2 weeks to recover from the 2 days she spent sucking on her pacifier. So please, be careful to inspect every cutely designed pacifier to prevent your baby from going through the same situation!!

  • Sorry you had that experience.  We use them with no problems.  It's the only kind DS will take.
  • We use the MAM pacis all the time and they have never bothered DD.  Those are the only ones she will suck on.  The nipple is shaped different from all of th other brands.

  • No problems here.  Ours have the bumps on them.
  • I had never heard of MAM untill DS was given it in the hospital.  I had bought NUKs.  He loves the MAMs and they have been great so far.  The NUKs leave marks on his face. I returned my unopened NUKs and will be buying more MAMs.

I think you just had a bad pacifier.

  • Maybe your DD has really sensitive skin.  We use MAM pacis and DS loves them.

  • Honestly the bumps are there to help prevent suction around their mouth. Maybe she is allergic to the type of plastic MAM uses.
  • I see what you mean.  I wonder if your DD is allergic to it or something?  My DD loves them.  We have had no issues.
  • MAM is the only one that DS will take! It was the one they gave to us in the hospital. So far no problems.
  • Hmm DD has used MAM pacifiers since birth with no problems.  She has some that are 0+ with precious written on one and a heart on the other.  She also has some that are 2+ one's white and one's pink.
  • The bumps are supposed to be there. From the pamphlet we got with the MAM pacifiers:

    1. MAM pacifiers are kind to your baby's delicate skin.- The exclusive MAM shield has a unique system of large ventilation holes and a patented raised pattern of dimples that reduce skin irritation by not allowing saliva to be trapped against the skin.

I'm sorry that your LO had a bad reaction to them, but they are all we use and DD has never had a bad reaction.

    This

  • Yeah, the bumps are supposed to be there. They keep the plastic from being sucked against the skin and help keep the skin dry. We've used Mam with both out kids without a problem. We love them. Sorry you had a bad experience. Maybe your daughter is destined to have incredibly sensitive skin.
