(Probably Stupid) Question about Contractions

With DD I never had contractions just a scheduled c/s because of medical issues.  So essentially, I don't know exactly the difference between BH and real contractions.  I have been having a lot of painful tightening all morning, I have not eaten anything and am really hungry, but whenever I "contract" I get really nauseated and almost feel like puking.  I was wondering if that is normal during contractions or I am just overly hungry.  (I have to wait a little before I eat because of medication that I take) I am hoping that they are not and it will be awhile till LO makes her entrance since I am not ready and neither is she.

Re: (Probably Stupid) Question about Contractions

  • There is a page about this in my baby book.

Real contractions have a pattern, while BH don't.

Real contractions get closer together, while BH don't.

I don't remember the other ones, but those are the 2 most important.

  • Based on what you described I would guess that your contractions are related to hunger and not the "real" thing.  I had NO problem eating during the earlier stages of labor (pre 5 cm), in fact I was hungry.

I agree. Not eating and/or not drinking enough water can cause contractions, cramps or pains that feel like all of the above. Real contractions typically have a pattern and get more painful.
