Formula Babies...

So the twins are just about 3 1/2 months old and they have been on formula(breast milk never came in), switched a couple of times due to acid reflux.  They have been on Smilac Alimentum for the past two months, and ever since they were put on this formula the do not want to eat it.  I have to force them to eat 4 ounces.  The doctor said they should be eating between 6-7 ounces.  So the doctor made me strech the time and they still refuse to eat it.  So that means they arent gaining as much weight as they did in the begining and they dont sleep because they wake up every 2 hours and are hungry.  They start to eat and then push the bottle away and cry.  So here my dilema, do I make an executive decision and change the formula?  And does any one know the most gentle formula?  I see the doctor in two weeks, but for my own sanity I  need to change something!!  Thanks =)

    I say make the executive decision and change it.  While the dr's intentions are good, he's not getting up every two hours to feed them.  MIL was here one day and she was commenting on their formula and how it made them spit up (though they barely spit up).  She said she doesn't think the DR has them on the right formula.  I said to her I could change it at anytime I wanted and she was shocked "Doesn't the DR have to change it".  My response "THey are my babies not his".  It's not like you're trying to give them hot sauce or something.

    I would change it if I were you as well - it's strange how both of your babies don't want it and not just the other!  My DD has been on Similac Early Shield since Day 1 but I don't believe that's the most gentle - have you tried GoodStart?  A lot of my friends' babies have used that and have done well.  GL!!

    I know its sooo weird how they both do not want to eat it, and this formula smells horrible, so I can only imagine how it tastes.  I was on the GoodStart,  but I just saw they make a gentle broken down formula, I think I will go back to that brand.  They gained 3 1/2 pounds the first month they were on it, opposed to only gaining 3 pounds in two months on the alimentum.  Thanks Ladies, they are my babies and I am in controll, lol!!  ;)

    Can you try Enfamil Nutramigen? That is the same thing as the Alimentum (which DS was on for the first year of his life...he did eventually get used to the taste). My pedi said that they do taste a little different and some babies prefer one over the other. And also 6-7 ounces seems like a lot of formula at one time for a 3 month old. 4-5 ounces seems like plenty for that age. But of course your pedi knows best.

    We were on the Nutramigen for a couple of weeks, but they were projectile(?) vomiting, so they changed it.  He said they sweeten it with corn starch, so he changed it because they sweeten Alimentium with actual sugar and the corn starch could have been the reason for the vomiting.  I thought 6-7 was alot too, but he said they should be eating that every 4 hours, and once they eat that much they will be sleeping through the night.  But who knows, I cant get them to even eat 4 ounces every 4 hours at some feedings, so I feel like they are waking up all night to try to catch up on calories.  This baby stuff is a hard science ;)

    My girls hated that stuff.  They would not eat it.  The dr said they needed 2 weeks to get used to it and that was unexceptable to me so I changed it.  I put them on soy.  She was worried it was reflux and a milk/soy protein allergy but they did great on the soy.  They were doing okay on Similac sensitive, too.  GL.

    Go with your mommy instincts and change them. Even if you don't know HOW you know, you know it's what you should do. Don't second guess, just switch them.

    (our pedi tried making us second guess our formula decisions and when we finally went with our gut instincts Sadie was perfect, not clawing up my back due to intestinal problems, which my doctor tried saying was colic. Jackass. I can't stand that guy.)

    I would also change it... I went from Nutramigen to Gentlease and it made a huge difference... and it is really gentle! my MSPI baby who cannot have milk protein does fine on Gentlease (and I use the Target generic!)
