Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Baby Gasping

I was just wondering if any other LOs are gasping for air. Every so often my LO has a big gasp and then goes on like normal. It happens during sleep and when he's awake, whether he is lying flat or not. I know it seems like everything is OK, but I've been surfing the net and I haven't found any site that says it's normal, actually, there isn't much out there about it, and what I can find relates it to diaper changes, which does not happen to my son. Anyone have any insight?

  • No, but I would call the pedi just to be on the safe side.

  • Our pedi told us that breathing patterns are abnormal for a while. DD doesn't gasp like how you describe but her breathing is all over the place. It's worth asking about at your next visit.

  • Mine does this too. Although sometimes it's maybe about twice every other hour. I'm going to bring it up with my pedi next week at the checkup. It worries me too since there isn't anything that says it might be normal.
  • if it makes you concerned, i would call the pedi. newborns have a very weird breathing pattern, so it could be normal.

eta: i just realized he's 2 months old. has he always done this?

  • Does it come along with a high pitched sound?  We discovered our LO has this-he often gasps.

Laryngomalacia (literally, "soft larynx") is a very common condition of infancy, in which the soft, immature cartilage of the upper larynx collapses inward during inhalation, causing airway obstruction. It can also be seen in older patients, especially those with neuromuscular conditions resulting in weakness of the muscles of the throat. However, the infantile form is much more common.

  • I've asked my doc about this about 3 times...and he says it's normal.  Sometimes I wonder if he really understands what kind of "deep breathe" it is,  I keep explaining it to him.  He doesn't do it hardly at all now, but in the beginning, yes.

I would just talk to your pedi to make sure they aren't concerned though.

  • Do they grow out of this? What tests were done for this diagnosis?

Yes, he has done it from the beginning.

My Dr. said most babies grow out of it by 6 months-the cartilage just needs time to get more firm.  He says it is more disturbing to the parents than the baby.  He said it is only of concern if it gets worse, then they will "scope" him.  He was diagnosed just by hearing it.
